Video games have recently been linked to school shootings, violent outbursts, and increased irritability levels in children and young adults. In Time’s online article “Little By Little, Violent Video Games Make Us More Aggressive”, Alice Park writes about the ongoing debate regarding violence in video games. She writes “Worries about how violence in virtual reality might play out in real life have led legislators to propose everything from taxing violent video games to proposing age restrictions on who can buy them.” Now, there are some video games that have age restrictions, but Park also mentions that “Approximately 90% of children in the U.S. play video games, and more than 90% of those games involve mature content that often includes violence.” These numbers are astonishing, and the fact that so many children are playing games that promote such violence is mind blowing. Absolute massacres have been taking place in schools and just in general recently, and, without surprise, have a link to violence found in various forms of media, but especially in video games. Taking a look at the perpetrators in school killings, and recent murderers, a good amount of them have been avid video gamers. Adam Lanza, for example, the murderer involved in the Sandy Hook school shooting played video games, many of which are violent. There is also an undeniable link between the fact that he also had a video game at his home that portrayed a school shooting. How can we ignore this? This man…
