Violent Video Games Do Not Commit Mass Shootings

Decent Essays
Playing violent video games does not cause kids to commit mass shootings or become criminals. People all over the world play video games, whether they are violent or not. While there has been over 150 million americans who play video games there has only been 71 mass shootings between the years 1982 and august of 2015. Only seven of the 71 were committed by a minor under the age of 18. Mass shootings are only committed by mentally unstable people not by just a regular video game player who’s trying to have fun or relieve stress. The mentally unstable on the other hand are more likely to use violent video games as an excuse to do violent acts or behave unethically. Studies have shown that people who play violent video games have less stress.

The reason why that is, is simple, people are just playing the game, and that is it. As claimed by Steve Levitt, “If young men—those who are most likely to commit violent acts—are kept busy in front of their TVs and computers for hours on end, they will be too busy to go out into the streets and do real violent things. ”(Dashevsky 1). In other words, Levitt asserts that violent video games do not cause players to do violent activities since they are too busy playing that game to go do it. That statement is true both factually and logically because if they are busy doing one activity how would they be able to do any other…

Video games never have been the cause for violent behavior that led to criminal actions. Politicians have long been looking for an excuse as to the reason that many national tragedies happen such as many mass shootings. To blame these acts of violence on the sole act of playing video game would be just plain idiotic. Studies done have shown that while violent behavior has long been linked to aggression in children and teenagers, there has been no such evidence to link it to criminal behavior (Stifferlin). Politicians and ignorant people have used video games as a pretext for the actions of criminals who have caused nation wide tragedies.…
