Every person, no matter where they are from, has strengths to offer, beliefs to uphold, and backgrounds that shape them. As a captain I will listen to my crew members and learn the things that shape them as a valuable member of our team. I will be careful of the things that I talk about and the language that I use, knowing that my words and actions can have dramatic and lasting affects on my ability retain the respect of my crew. In addition to being empathetic, I will lead by example.
Last, Physical fitness is important to the effectiveness of a fire fighter. As leader I will never set expectations for my crew members that I do hold myself accountable for as well. Pushing your body past its precieved limits can reveal abilities and confidence that a person did not know that they had. Excercising as a crew and pushing each other to reach past these limits will build confidence as a crew. When we are faced with situations that seam to be beyond our ability, we can draw from the our ability to push past precieved limitations ad rise to the occasion.
In summary, being a manager is moldable by policy and procedure. To be a leader requires a deeper sense of importance. To be an affective leader I will train with my crew, be empathetic to differences, encourage physical
