The Use of Animals in Medical Research Animal testing can help humans find cures for diseases without the risk of human casualty. Animal testing has helped further research in a plethora of medical fields. Thanks to animal testing, researchers are discovering new advances in cancer research and tumor biology. This includes treatments that aim directly at killing more cancer cells than normal cells (“Animal Research Benefits” 1). Also, animals are extremely similar to humans in terms of their DNA and body systems, making them perfect subjects for medical research (“Animal Testing” 2). The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), are large participants in using animal testing to further improve medical treatments. UCLA researchers used mice to perfect the drug “Herceptin”, which is the first cancer treatment that “directly targets a specific genetic alteration”. This new treatment practically eliminates side effects such as hair loss and nausea that most cancer patients experience when they use older treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy (“Animal Research Generates” 1). Not only did the researchers at UCLA find new breakthroughs for physical illness, but they also use these animals for medical advances in mental illness. The prefrontal cortex of the brain is well developed in primates, just like in humans. This allows researchers to study the neurochemicals in this cortex. This study could lead to the understanding of the cause of…
