Most people do not know what goes on behind the scenes of the beauty industry. How do people think they determine whether a product is safe for a human or not? Animal testing is the most used method of testing products. There are many things people don't know about the method and there are many people against it. Testing on animals is an ongoing debate among people due to the reasoning, pros and cons, and the alternative choices available. Focusing on the pros first, animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments. (Should Animals). Some people think that animals are appropriate to test on because of how similar they are to humans. Some also say that it is highly regulated, with laws in place to protect the animals from mistreatment. (Should animals). It is said that animal researchers treat animals humanely, both for the animals sake and for reliable test results. However, the cons are still pretty big. Most think that animal testing is cruel and inhumane. Also, it is said that animals are very different than humans and make poor test subjects. (Should Animals). Animal body functions seem to work differently than ours. For example, dogs are allergic to chocolate and cannot have it, not every human is allergic to chocolate. That is just one example of the difference between animal and human bodies. 95% of the animals used in experiments are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act. (Should Animals). Testing on animals is also a lot more expensive and non-practical than alternative methods. (Animals In). “Some people, including some scientists object to the practice strictly on ethical and moral grounds, refuting or rejecting any scientific evidence that animal testing is helpful to humans.” (Judson 12). However, groups opposing the cruel treatment of animals were influential in getting regulations passed to protect welfare of animals. (Judson 10).
