Psychologists use animals to learn and understand some basic human behaviours such as hunger, thirst and reproduction. The use of animals in psychology links back to the 17th century in the UK. From this point of the history animals have been used for various psychological and biological reasons but now we face with a debate were people believe that animals shouldn’t be used in experiments.

There are several reasons why people are against this but the first and, perhaps the most important one, is because of ethics. According to Jeremy Bentham, a famous philosopher, “The question is not, Can they reason?, nor Can they talk? but, Can they suffer? Why should the law refuse its protection to any sensitive being?”. This kind of questions are brought up to the light everyday and many people think that experimenting on animals is morally wrong. Animals deserve “rights”. This doesn’t mean psychologist would stop experimenting on them but perhaps they can provide a reasonable and adequate way of treating them.

Apart from ethics there are some pros and cons of animal experimentation. Some of the most important advantages are that they have contribute to many self-saving cures and treatments. “The California Biomedical Research Association states that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from

As stated by Professor Charles R Magel,“Ask the experimenters why they test on animals and the answer is: ‘Because animals are like us’. Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals and the answer is ‘Because the animals are not like us’. Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction” (Source #4). Scientists believe that animals are more similar to us in body anatomy and biology than personality. However, they’re more like us human in a sense of consciousness rather than body.…

I believe that animal experimentation is a valid medical research technique and am support it. I believe this for a multitude of reasons, the biggest being as follows: animal experimentation is necessary for the betterment of medical technologies and drug development, alternatives are not as cost efficient and do not produce results that are as accurate as those produces by animal experimentation, and animals do not have equal rights to humans. I personally find these reasons to be irrefutable cause for the continuation of the use of animals throughout science. These reasons, backed by evidence and facts, cause me to believe that animal experimentation, although controversial, is both an ethically and scientifically valid method. I believe…
