he cosmetics industry is well known for its ever-changing array of products, and with new products comes testing. Many companies use animals such as mice, fish, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, cats, dogs, and monkeys as their “test dummies” due to the similarities between their DNA and human DNA (The Humane Society). Numerous animal-rights campaigns believe that testing on animals is inhumane and should be replaced with other methods. Several companies argue that animal testing is the only reliable form of study. However, research has proven that there are many secure forms of cosmetic testing that are safe and humane (Humane Society International).

There are, in fact, many substitutes to animal testing that are humane and safe. One alternative is computer modeling. Scientists have created a wide variety of computer models that can imitate human composition. Studies showed that these models can suitably predict the ways that cosmetics may react in the human body (Humane Society International). Another alternative is research with human volunteers. The volunteers would be given a small, one-time drug dose and scientists would record the outcome. Another substitute could be human-patent simulators. With human simulators that are strikingly life-like, scientists are able to perform the same tests they would do on animals without having to harm an animal (PETA).

Animal testing is harsh and inhuman. The cons heavily outweigh the pros. With new and exciting research being done to find more and more substitutes to animal testing, the arguments made by cosmetic companies are losing their verity. There are so many alternatives to animal testing that there is no excuse to continue torturing animals that do not yield accurate results for

One alternative is to use human tissues instead of animals, for testing and cosmetics. If products are being made for humans, it would be best to use the primary source it is being used for. " Humans and animals differ too much to make animal research useful” (James-Enger, 1998:1) If this alternative goes in place and is successful it will decrease the millions of animals being killed or injured for the research each year. If this method can be mastered, it will be the best alternative for animal testing. If scientist can use human tissues to develop test models, they will be able to collect more accurate data; which will allow them to produce safer medicines and cosmetic products.…

“If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal who hasn 't done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit 's eyes, they should throw it in Charles Manson 's eyes and ask him if it hurts,” said comedian Ellen DeGeneres in My Point... And I Do Have One, her humorous reflection on her life. Though Ellen DeGeneres makes a hyperbolic point, she questions the ethicality of animal testing.…

Makeup industries such Revlon and other types of industries had discontinued animal testing simply because it doesn’t work anymore. “The food and Drug Administration (FDA) has noted 92 percent of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trial because they don’t work or are dangerous”, claims Noah Berlatsky in his document, Animal Testing is Bad Science. Yet, the biggest reason for the discontinuation is advances in technology. “In 2009, industry trade group Cosmetics Europe, along with a division of the European Commission on Research & Innovation, launched a $68-million research initiative to develop lab technologies and computational models capable of predicting the toxicity of chemicals in humans” says Gregory Mone in his article, New Models in Cosmetics Replacing Animal Testing. Nowadays, this gives industries a better advantage in decision to invest their money into better accuracy rather than failed…

Some alternatives include virtual test methods and models, computer models and simulations, stem cell research and genetic testing methods, and micro dosing.
