Over the past 103 years, 71 of the Nobel Prizes for Medicine were awarded to scientists that used animal research. Great medical discoveries have been because of animal testing. One recent study was conducted by implanting cow cartilage on the back of a lab rat and they were able to grow a human ear, creating the possibility of fabricating body parts for plastic and reconstructive surgery. Also, when studying cells in a petri dish, there are limitations. It isn’t adequate testing for blood pressure and blindness. In addition, it doesn’t allow for the study of interrelated processes in the immune system, endocrine system, and central nervous system. Furthermore, a circulatory system is required to test how a medication is carried and delivered to different organs, and when trying to test brain treatment, nothing has been found that can simulate the human brain …show more content…
In the past there may have not been an alternative to animal testing but the world of science has come such a long way. Because animal testing is not only expensive, cruel, and generally inapplicable to humans we need to find other ways to test new medicine and cures for diseases. There are many different alternatives out there to animal testing. “These modern methods include sophisticated tests using human cells and tissues (also known as in vitro methods), advanced computer-modeling techniques (often referred to as in silico models), and studies with human volunteers” (PETA). In vitro testing uses actual human cells in petri dishes, which is clearly a beneficial method, in that; the way the human tissue will react to the testing is more relevant than any testing on animals. According to PETA (and other activists), with so many options out there we should be able to eliminate animal
