Is Animal Testing Wrong? In the current discussions of animal testing, an important argument has been whether or not animal testing is wrong, considering that animals have feelings. One viewpoint is that using animals for testing is completely okay and important in human survival. From this idea, many people such as Heloisa Sabin believe that “without animal research, polio would still be claiming thousands of lives each year” (158). Basically, Sabin is stating that sacrificing animals for testing saves human lives. From a conflicting position, others insist that animal testing is inhumane and extremely cruel. Though I concede that in some situations, animal testing may be useful, such as in immensely important medical studies, I still maintain that it is unnecessary to make an animal suffer and be discriminated against. Although some people may think that animal testing is healthy and beneficial to humans, I believe that animal testing is unethical and utterly wrong because of the unfair repulsive treatment that animals receive from scientists. Millions of animals are put through unavailing animal tests each year, and most of them suffer abuse that is senseless because most tests are inaccurate. Peggy Carlson, an animal rights activist and head of the humane society argues “Nearly everything that medicine has learned about what substances cause human cancer and birth defects has come from human clinical and epidemiological studies because animal experiments do not accurately predict what occurs in humans” (161). In other words animals are being used and abused in tests that are not even projecting similar results as they would if humans were to do the test. Scientists say animals are used in testing because they are similar to humans in many ways. The truth is, they are similar to humans in many ways, but we are not exactly identical and also have many differences that affect test results. That being said, animals have the ability to feel pain and suffer as humans do. Singer states that “the grounds for inferring that these animals can feel pain are nearly as good as the grounds for inferring other humans do” (135). Pretty much Singer means that there is no way to prove whether other humans or animals feel pain and there is about the same amount of evidence for each. Humans and animals both have similar nervous systems and both react the same way to pain.
