Under Armour was created by former University of Maryland football player Kevin Plank, in 1996. The company started with a simple plan to make a more advanced T-shirt that not only provided compression, but got perspiration off your skin rather than absorb it. The plan was for the shirt to also regulate temperature between hot and cold, and enhance performance. “Under Armour is the originator of performance apparel - gear engineered to keep athletes cool, dry and light throughout the course of a game, practice or workout” (UA, Inc., 2018). Kevin Plank thought of this idea back in his playing days, when he hated that he would have to change his sweat-soaked cotton T-shirts throughout his days. Kevin Plank started Under Armour in his grandmother’s basement in Washington D.C. where he was traveling up and down the east coast and selling his new product out of the trunk of his car. By the end of 1996, Under Armour generated $17,000 in sales. By the end of 1998, Under Armour outgrew his grandmother’s basement and moved to warehouse and headquarters in Baltimore. There are many leadership traits and qualities that Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank possesses that have made him a successful leader. He came up with an idea and set up a plan to start Under Armour. Throughout his career there, he had a vision that assisted him in planning for the future. He then organized his company, although it was in his grandmother’s basement, he eventually moved to a brand new headquarter and warehouse.
