His inability to reach out and assist junior Marines was not because his lack of caring for their welfare. He had a misunderstanding of who they were and why they had a different perspective on life. The current issues facing the Marine Corps today: women in combat MOSs, the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell;” the Uniformed Victim Advocate (UVA), and Equal Opportunity (EO) issues made him feel uncomfortable. Additionally, an unapproachable persona towards Staff Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs) added to the extinction of an acceptable command climate. SNCOs were apprehensive to ask for guidance issues. He would rather make decisions because of the way it was always done rather than listen and collaborate for a more successful solution. His ego driven mentality devastated the command. Marines no longer respond or respect ego driven leadership. The continuance of the mindset of there is only “one way” to achieve success stovepipes creativity. A split of leadership surfaced, his passion was no longer with the most important asset the Marine Corps cherish, the Marines. Unfortunately, He new what he was doing but he forgot “why” he loved doing it. It is not enough to release Marines on liberty but critical to know enough about them and their family to ensure they are able to make important events in their families’ lives. Demonstrating that genuine care exists for the Marine’s overall well-being allows increased trust inside the workplace and more effort towards mission accomplishment. This simple ideology will reinforce the Marine 's commitment to the mission and to the leader with their blood, sweat, and tears and creates a selfless instead of selfish attitude among the unit. We currently have the most educated force in the history of our Marine Corps. The Marine Corps will risk stunting the growth of quality Marines if the leadership cannot embrace and adapt with the current times and problems. Leaders must have the ability to remain flexible, logical, and listen. Leadership has a responsibility to the young men and women that serve to train to the best of our ability. We are helping them with their struggles to be a better Marines and citizens. Some leaders recognize the need for change and some are nowhere near
