On August 25, 2013 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York the Video Music Awards were held. The next performer up was Miley Cyrus. As already making headlines for being a performer of the night the spotlight was already on her. After she performed a little melody from her upcoming album she brought out Robin Thicke who would perform his hit song “Blurred Lines” with her. As Robin Thicke kept singing during the performance Miley Cyrus got in front of Robin Thicke and bent over and “twerked” on him. It was one of the most shocking things to ever happen on live television especially knowing that Robin Thicke was married. After the performance Miley Cyrus generated over 300,000 tweets per minute and in the mix of those tweets the word twerk was all in it. On the next day media critics and some people were still confused on what the word twerk really meant.

This dance focused on the butt and had existed for centuries but didn’t really get much attention until it was banned in the 1980’s. If we look at how twerking is looked at today in America it would “ interpret it as being sexual, scandalous and controversial”. When really if you put it in it’s original context it means joy and people only did the Mapouka dance or shook their butts on occasions like “family gatherings and weddings”. Since the dance Mapouka was banned in the 80’s and later became legal again in 2000 how did the word “twerk”come about
