Scully (2013) recognizes that “Clinical nurse leaders are crucial to the success of patient care initiatives: good leaders help produce good care and poor leaders produce poor care; likewise for academic, political and executive fields of nursing” (p. 443). Based on the readings and clinical experiences my suggestion on how to improve the nursing leadership would be to help nursing leaders develops characteristics of, and/or adopt a transformational leadership style. The definition of transformational leadership style is “leaders and followers help each other to advance to a higher level of morale and motivation” (Sherman, 2012). According Sherman (2012) transformational leadership is a major component of the Magnet model developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. It is necessary each individual is able to hold themselves and their colleagues accountable for the performance of the team. Based on my readings and the experiences of my clinical, I would suggest that to improve the process of front line staff there needs to be teambuilding exercises implemented. Accountability and fostering teamwork appears to be important to attending success as a unit and improving patient outcomes. Within my microsystem, preventing violence is becoming more challenging where there is a higher risk for violent and aggressive patients. Although the violence rate is not unacceptable, it is a continuous goal to have zero violence episodes on the unit which is not so. The protocol on the unit is to assess the patient for violence behaviors at admission using reliable evidence based practiced risk assessment located in the electronic medical record and then implementing certain risk prevention interventions. This protocol, however, is often missed. Staff accountability can help this by having staff members accept being accountable to ensure other staff members is following through with this risk assessment by review patient charts. Commitment to teamwork and accountability has the ability to improve nursing care and patient
