Tlc To Test For Purity Of Aspirin

Decent Essays
Task 3
P1
When using thin layer chromatography (TLC) to test for purity of aspirin it is a quick and simple method.
Firstly when using the TLC method you need to have a TLC sheet and mark on the sheet 0.5cm up on the sheet and draw a line, make sure you don’t press too hard on the paper as this will disrupt the absorbent on the paper. You need to make sure the samples have been marked on the paper so you don’t get mixed up and leave a gap between the aspirin samples so they don’t run together as this will give an inaccurate result.
Next get a 1% concentrated sample of a known purity of salicylic acid as this is suitable for the TLC analysis, then obtain a small glass rod (micro capillary) and use this to dip in the solution and on to the paper in the position where the sample of aspirin is named. Make sure the spot isn’t too large as this could mean it could run and collide with other solutions.

Then when you have finished doing that, organise the beaker by putting the solvent into the beaker filling it to less than 0.5cm so the bottom of the paper is just touching the solvent baseline. Cover the beaker with either a watch glass or clingfilm and leave it with no disturbances on the side or in a fume cupboard. Make sure the solvent doesn’t touch the spot of aspirin as this could give an inaccurate

Visual comparison of the available solid and aqueous compounds to the unknown was done first so as to eliminate unnecessary testing. A 30.0 g/mL solution of the unknown was made in a beaker by dissolving 1.000 g of the unknown in 30.0 mL of distilled water. Before weighing out 1.000 g of the unknown, the scale was zeroed out with a piece of weighing paper (square cut-out of normal paper) on it. Using a scoopula, 1.000 g was the compound was carefully placed on the weighing paper and measured to exactly 1.000 g. These same measurements and procedures were used when solutions of calcium chloride and nitric acid were created using separate beakers. Portions of each solution were then poured into test tubes (exact measurements were not necessary for this step).…

Summary The purpose and goal of this project was to perform a number of tests in the lab and use a dichotomous key to eventually classify a Gram-positive cocci that we were given on March 25th. The key has seven tests to help you determine a certain bacteria, your tests will later on lead you down a certain side to contribute in defining the genus and species. All the following procedures were carried out on the gram positive cocci unknown in this order: Catalase, Oxidase, Nitrate Reduction, Oxidation-Fermentation, Phenol Red, Bacitracin, Coagulase, and lastly, Gelatin Hydrolysis. These tests led me to believe that unknown number 93 is Kocuria rosea.…

DEVIATION BACKGROUND: On 07/28/2017, During the inspection of PRODUCT A on TP- 18, while the operator was transferring the coated tablets into a plastic scoop, which is used to load the coated tablets into the printer product hopper during the printing, what appeared to be a live and small gnat fly was observed inside the product bag. This was discovered after the operator pulled the product liner off the coated drum to pour the remaining tablets into the scoop. Per routine procedure, during the printing process in TP18, the operator opens one of the coated tablets drum (no needs to be in sequential number), removes the twist tie from the outer and inner liners and bloused them over, using a plastic scoop transfers the tablets one scoop at the time into the printer hopper until it is full. The printed tablets are then transferred into a labeled and numbered double lined container until 11.5 kg of printed tablets are added or end of batch.…

For task 3 the problem was to find one or more trends that could quantitatively control the amount of light emitted from the glow sticks. This investigation has value to companies or people that want to find a way to increase the brightness of glow sticks. Experimental Design and Procedure To control the amount of light emitted from the glow stick we decided to investigate with the variable, increasing alkalinity.…

Separation through Ion Exchange Chromatography Introduction Amino acids are important molecules that serve as building blocks for all proteins that are made in every organism. Although there are millions of different proteins that can be made by all living things combined, all proteins are derived from a base of 20 amino acids that are combined together in different ways to create the diversity of life that is on Earth. Humans cannot produce all of the amino acids needed for protein synthesis, so these essential amino acids must be consumed so that the body can function and continue to produce proteins needed for survival. All amino acids share the same basic structure, which is a carboxyl group and an amino group attached to the same carbon…

Urinalysis is mostly a labor process used to observe urine at a microscopic level (Ben-Ezra, 1998). In the urinalysis, one of the experiments conducted was observing the physical characteristics of the urine sample. The physical characteristics included the color, transparency, odor, and pH level. Observing and determining the color, transparency, odor, and pH of urine can tell the person’s diet and possibly if there might be a bodily issue going on (Gutierrez, 2014). For the first physical test, detecting color, the hypothesis was that the urine sample would be a mid-dark yellow.…

When the salicylic acid was weighed in the beginning, weighing paper was supposed to be used to weigh the salicylic acid on balance, but instead a lab paper was used instead. This could have given an inaccurate mass reading due to the movement of bent layer of papers on the scale, causing the mass fluctuate. This could have led to imperfections in the purity of our aspirin, because of incorrect amounts of salicylic acid measured. Also, 40 ml of water was added to decompose the acetic anhydride right after the salicylic acid completely dissolved. Doing this before adding an initial 4 ml of water could have impact the decomposition process.…
