When using thin layer chromatography (TLC) to test for purity of aspirin it is a quick and simple method.
Firstly when using the TLC method you need to have a TLC sheet and mark on the sheet 0.5cm up on the sheet and draw a line, make sure you don’t press too hard on the paper as this will disrupt the absorbent on the paper. You need to make sure the samples have been marked on the paper so you don’t get mixed up and leave a gap between the aspirin samples so they don’t run together as this will give an inaccurate result.
Next get a 1% concentrated sample of a known purity of salicylic acid as this is suitable for the TLC analysis, then obtain a small glass rod (micro capillary) and use this to dip in the solution and on to the paper in the position where the sample of aspirin is named. Make sure the spot isn’t too large as this could mean it could run and collide with other solutions. …show more content…
Then when you have finished doing that, organise the beaker by putting the solvent into the beaker filling it to less than 0.5cm so the bottom of the paper is just touching the solvent baseline. Cover the beaker with either a watch glass or clingfilm and leave it with no disturbances on the side or in a fume cupboard. Make sure the solvent doesn’t touch the spot of aspirin as this could give an inaccurate
