Defining the Problem/Question

Task 2 was to create a proposal to determine the quantitative characteristics that could control the light that is emitted from glow sticks. For task 3 the problem was to find one or more trends that could quantitatively control the amount of light emitted from the glow sticks. This investigation has value to companies or people that want to find a way to increase the brightness of glow sticks.

Experimental Design and Procedure
To control the amount of light emitted from the glow stick we decided to investigate with the variable, increasing alkalinity. Our goal with this variable was to measure the intensity of the glow stick stock when increasing the amount of Potassium Hydroxide in ethanol. To achieve this,

Wipe 4mL vial with KimWipes and place vial into the vial block and test absorbency (click collect, wait for data to process, click stop to end data)
7. For the variable, alkalinity, fill 6 more 4mL vials with 1.5mL of the original glow stick solution using 1.0mL syringe, cap, and cover in foil.
8. One by one use micropipette to add potassium hydroxide in ethanol (install micropipette tip, spin plunger button to designated volume in the display window, press the plunger button to the second stop outside of solution and hold, place tip inside potassium hydroxide in ethanol solution, release plunger button, take tip out of potassium hydroxide in ethanol solution, place tip inside 4mL vial with glow stick solution, press the plunger button to the first stop, take tip out of glow stick solution and dispose of tip)
9. Cap vial, wipe with KimWipes and place vial block and test absorbency (click Collect, chose Store Last Run, wait for data to process, and click Stop to end data)
10. Record intensity of solution by finding the peak (maximum) of the graph into a table (intensity vs. amount of potassium hydroxide in ethanol solution)
11. Repeat steps 8-10 with each amount of potassium hydroxide in ethanol (1st vial with 50µm, 2nd with 75µm, 3rd with 100 µm, 4th with 125 µm, 5th with 150 µm, and 6th with 200

For this experiment, a few scientists are researching how different flavors/colors of sports drinks effect the amount of red 40 dye in each drink. The independent variable in the experiment is the flavors of Gatorade (a brand of sports drinks) used, while the dependent variable is the concentration of dye the sports drinks contain. The constant variable is the spectrophotometer, the amount of liquid used, and the same type of cuvette. The controlled variable is only using water. In order to determine which drink would have the greatest concentration of red 40 dye, the scientists must first understand what it actually is.…

Experimental Control Group: The standard of comparison is a glow-stick that is the same type of glow-stick to the others but is not affected by the different water temperatures. The reason for not allowing the glow-stick to be placed in the different water temperatures is because the experiment is testing the glow-sticks at different water temperatures, so it is reasonable to have the standard of comparison to be a glow-stick at the temperature all the other glow sticks have originally started at. Materials: There are three beakers, water, beaker of ice, a hot plate, three thermometers, three glow sticks, a small plastic ruler, and clear tape.…

Introduction: Nitrous acid (HNO2) is used as a source of nitrosonium ion (N≡O+). The nitrosonium ion by reacting with an aromatic amine converted into a diazonium salt. As diazonium ion is a weak electrophile, it reacts with electron-rich, aromatic coupling agents to produce an azo dye. The products are mainly ortho and para due to the reaction being an electrophilic aromatic substitution Reaction: p-nitroaniline p-nitro benzenediazonium chloride Para-red Procedure: Production of para-Nitrobenzenediazonium chloride: Prepare 7% NaNO2 by dissolving 7 g of NaNO2 in 100 mL water and in another flask, dissolve 0.4 g of sodium acetate in 3 mL of water.…
