Nurses play an integral role in modern healthcare. Nurse is one of the most demanding professions in the world and needs a lot of dedication and commitment to the job. Nurses have to juggle various roles. A nurse has to act as a caregiver, communicator, a teacher and an advocate among others. If nurses were to be eliminated from the healthcare system, it would collapse in its tracks. This is the very reason why nurses are the heart of a healthcare since early ages which can be traced to the early 19th century to the school that was originated by Florence Nightingale. Patient engagement is a top priority for both health systems and health plans in population health management. Nurse is the mediator who can convey messages for patients and be the proponent for those who may fall into the cracks of the healthcare system. Nursing is considered to be daunting for some as the profession itself circulates matters that concerns negligence and malpractices hence the establishment of Code of ethical conducts and individualized policies in modern healthcare. It is framework/principals for a nurse to abide all rules in order to prevent law suits and ultimately maintains patient safety. Nurses are the liaisons of fragmented patient care that includes in rendering basic need of the patient, administering medications and carrying out orders given by the doctors. In modern healthcare, nurses are the coordinator for patient care and given the privilege to collaborate with other healthcare members, care can be amended.
Every team requires a manager/ team lead in any institution. Modern healthcare requires an assertive form of nursing roles in order to keep all matter in check and to ensure that all tasks are carried out. The role of nurse in being a manager/ team lead allows the whole team to work in one direction and it ensures the whole team to be composed. Activities of a manager/team lead includes: planning, organizing, directing, controlling and delegating.
The role of the nurse in modern healthcare is varied and complex. Caring for patients requires the nurse to take on different roles at different times.
