INTRODUCTION The ELPS 953 Human Resources Management course at the University of Kansas provided me with new insights into the roles and responsibilities of district leadership. Even more so, this course has taught me how to think more like a Human Resource manager. There have been several opportunities recently in my professional life that have shaped my awareness of these new skills and perspectives that I have gained over the semester.
LEARNING AND APPLYING CONCEPTS PROFESSIONALLY A week ago, I walked into a conference with over 2,000 district and building administrators from around the country. Some of the districts are new to the AVID program, while others are rated National Demonstration Schools. Representation came from across

In fact, this would potentially be something to add to the curriculum in the near future. To summarize the several hour long episode, a group of angry community members, who self identify as Black Lives Matter-LFK, completely took over the board meeting shortly after the agenda was approved and an award was given out to an elementary custodian. This is the second time this group has taken over a board meeting where the board could not conduct any business. I describe this as fascinating, as it was incredible to watch the superintendent and the board members’ actions from an analytical standpoint. The superintendent did not stop the group and has admitted to not knowing exactly what to do. I immediately thought of Dr. DeLuca asking us, “What are you going to do?” I kept uttering this phrase over and over again to the point where my husband started looking at me with a weird expression. How could have the situation been diffused before getting to that point? The meeting was full of emotion and outbursts. I acknowledge that we [districts] want to protect both staff and students, and we do this through open and orderly communication. When I was almost having a personal anxiety …show more content…
I originally hoped to research more about cultural barriers students face in our system; however, I’ve had this underlying curiosity about the lack of women in school leadership. Therefore, I appreciated the opportunity to select a topic of my choice to complete the literature review over. Not only was it thought provoking to look deeper into this topic, but the writing process itself was helpful. I’ve never thought about literature reviews being organized similarly to the cluster diagram/web that we created earlier in the semester, but that visualization helped shape my writing and understanding of how to better present research

This quote represents the heart of human resource management. Dias (2009), defines human resource management (HRM) as “the process of employing people, training them, compensating them, developing policies relating to them, and developing strategies to retain them” (p. 8). Over the last several decades the field has undergone many changes, increasing the field’s importance to the overall success to organizations (Dias, 2009).…

Part 1: A Summary of Collaborative Leadership Since the creation of the English language, collaboration and teamwork have been terms used together. The word “collaborate” stems from the Latin root words com- (with, together) and –labor (work). Collaboration involves individuals coming together to achieve a common goal, and much more. In their critically acclaimed book Collaborative Leadership: How Citizens And Civic Leaders Can Make A Difference, Chrislip and Larson (1994) define collaboration as “[creating] a shared vision and joint strategies to address concerns that go beyond the purview of any particular party” (p. 5).…

Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
