Cultural Leadership Reflection

Decent Essays
When I volunteered to be my unit’s Cultural Internalization Leader, I was confident I could boost performance in no time.

Five months later, no one had joined my program and cooperation and motivation remained low. I sought advice from my boss, who praised me as an innovative problem solver but said I was running a one-woman show. In creating my programs, I didn’t communicate my reasoning and assigned tasks based on my own judgement. My decisions thus created anxiety, with many believing that I was only interested in helping certain employees.

As the world becomes more accessible and American society becomes more diverse, possession of cultural competence is becoming increasingly important. The chances of leading an organization or work team in which all members think like you, work like you, and have the same values as you are next to none, and ignoring these differences as a leader leads to dissatisfied employees, low productivity, and even lawsuits. During my time at the DU, I have held many leadership positions in on-campus organizations. My most current and challenging leadership role has been as Vice President of Programming for my sorority. The hardest part of my role is holding my members and myself accountable for their actions. Upon initiation, every member makes a promise to herself and the sorority to hold herself to the highest standards of character, as her actions no longer reflect just on herself, but on each and every member of our organization as well. As an elected leader of the organization, I have promised to do the same, and I am also responsible to help hold all members accountable for their actions when they are not in line with character expectations, whether it…

Leadership and Culture is a concept that I feel has great information for each and every person in general, but specifically for anyone in the workforce. The 9 cultural dimensions are very effective in identifying major aspects of working with people from different cultures. Ethnocentrism is a term that Northouse defines as, “the tendency for individuals to place their own group at the center of their observations of others and the world” (p.429). By defining this term in the beginning of the chapter, he is introducing a potential obstacle to being a successful leader who masters the concept of being able to lead not only people who are similar to yourself but much different. The GLOBE study is the part of leadership and culture that brings…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
