One important take away was the idea of using the idea of the inner voice sheet. This specifically stuck with me because I often find myself thinking about other things while I am reading. This then results in me not remembering a word I’ve read. This assignment has the reader keep in mind that if they catch their mind wandering as they read. Students are to stop and go back to the place they last remember. Reread that portion with a specific purpose in mind. As a personal take, rereading is not always the answer. Just because a student reads a piece over and over again, does not mean they are going to understand what they have read. The big idea with fix-up strategies is for students to make text connections, predictions, stop to think about what one already knows, ask questions, write, visualize, and retell. Often when students can explain a concept to another student they are enhancing their own understanding of that idea. I want to use time in my classroom to allow for students to share with others; whole group discussions, small group discussions, individual writing/thinking time, etc. One specific strategy that could be used is: think, pair, share. Where students have individual thinking time, then they discuss their thoughts with a partner, then share those thoughts with a small group or the whole
