There are several definitions about the meaning of leadership. Not only that, there are many more leadership theories about how leadership should work. I believe there is not one single theory or leadership style that will work for every person or every situation. However, most people tend to gravitate towards a specific leadership theory that best suits their character. I say this because it gives me great pleasure and motivates me to see that I can help motivate others to reach for higher goals and become leaders themselves. A transformational leader enhances the motivation, morale and performance of his follower group.(Transformational Leadership, 2014) Even as a teacher, when dealing with difficult or non cooperative students, I like to look for ways to motivate them or find meaningful activities to spark their interest in working with the group and completing a project. I like to do group projects or assignments because I like to see how leaders start to develop. Some of my most challenging students have become great leaders and students when given the opportunity to work in a team and take charge or a particular project. Sometimes this is what is needed for teachers as well. Leaders need to learn to delegate and not micromanage the staff since this blocks the creativity needed to find better solutions to the current problems. This is what I like to see. However, I will always try to get results using the transformational leadership theory before adjusting or changing to another theory that might give me results but will not benefit others in developing their potential. I always look for ways to solve problems and create a win-win situation. In this case, being a leader to me is not just being able to accomplish goals and objectives, but it is more of helping others become successful. I see teachers that are frustrated because the cannot teach the way they would like to teach because they have to teach “to the test”. I see others that might be dealing with roadblocks in implementing new strategies or programs to help our students. True leadership could solve these and many more problems or situations that are happening at our schools. This is the authentic leadership as defined in our readings. Leadership is a process that draws from both positive psychological capacities and a highly developed organizational context, which results in both greater self-awareness and self-regulated positive behaviors on the part of leaders and associates, fostering positive self-development.(Avolio,

What is leadership? Leadership can be traced back millions of years; one could postulate that the first forms of life on earth showed forms of leadership. For instance, Insects show leader ship behaviors with their foraging skills, as do birds with flocking. Thus, people from ancient times to now have tried to explain where leadership is derived. Consequently, there are seven theories that have been composed to explain leadership, great person, trait, behavioral, situational, contingency, transactional, transformational, and big five theories; each theory building upon the other and the ever advancing definition of leadership.…

He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…
