With the values that my parents have instilled in me I can contribute to the Howard legacy. I will do this by always being active and participating not only on the Howard campus but also around the community. My experience with this starts at a very young age. In my early years I was a brownie and Girl Scout, and not only did the Girl Scouts teach me about truth and service but it also taught me what it takes to be a great leader. These are qualities that I have kept with me throughout my life and have also given me multiple opportunities where I was able to strengthen them. One of the opportunities being was one of four students chosen to attend S.D.L.C. or the Student Diversity Leadership Conference. Here I not only learned about diversity and inclusion but I was also able to gain even more valuable tools and skills that I use in my everyday life. Today I use the skills that I have learned for my position as Peer Support Leader at my school. In this program I meet with 8th graders and talk to them and answer any questions they have about high school or life in general. It is a very selective position that I was chosen for by former members and the upper school faculty. It is one that I love and I would love to hold a similar position like this at Howard. These various positions have given me the confidence and tools that I need to succeed. I can bring what I have learned from these positions and my parents and contribute to the vision and legacy of Howard University, because my willingness to become a part of something great is important for my development as a future

I have had a lifelong passion for environmental issues that arose from a childhood spent amongst mountains, canyons, islands, and rivers. The Anacostia River near my home is dubbed “The Forgotten River,” for it has been transformed by neglect. It was integral to my childhood—my family canoed on the river, my crew team practiced on it, and my Eagle Scout project involved rehabilitating one of its wetlands. The river showed me that environmental issues are complex, involving science, social justice, politics, economics, and history. From a young age, I was stunned by my city’s apathy and saw a change that needed to occur.…

As children, our parents shape our ideas and opinions. When I was a child I thought Texas A&M was the only university my parents would let me attend based on the way they talked about it. I thought that they would not help pay for my college if I went anywhere else. It was not until I was in high school that I realized that Texas A&M was the only university I wanted to attend. I would like to study at Texas A&M to continue my family tradition, for the opportunities it offers after graduation and to be admitted to the dental school with a great education behind me.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

I wanted to make this the best orientation ever for them and I wanted to make them feel comfortable because I knew what it was like to be in their positions, I was just as anxious and out of place as they were.…

For as long as I can recall, I have been a creator. Before I even received my first essay prompts in school, as a child I already crafted stories to be transcribed by my father, or scribbled down by my own hands, or played out by toy dolls. I never even realized my natural inclination to writing until suddenly, around the third grade or so, my teachers and peers began noticing this peculiar aspect of myself. My essays were read aloud to the class, the teachers instructed me to assist my peers who struggled with grammar, the librarian gave me personal recommendations on which books were a satisfying read - sure enough, my aspiration to be a writer had been diagnosed.…

For every decision one makes they have a person or an event to accredit as to why they were influenced to make that decision. Previously, I watched shows like Greys Anatomy and envisioned myself saving one’s life as a doctor myself someday. Sometimes what we want in life though is not what we need. The class senior forum helped open my eyes to this realization through a job shadow within that career pathway. I found that working with needles just was not for me.…

Throughout my high school career, an important experience for me has been being the president of the Young Environmentalist Society, Y.E.S. Club, at my school. My Junior year I heard about the club, but it was inactive around the school. Being a person passionate about the environment, it was important for me to get the club more involved and to make the school more environmentally aware. My interest in the environment led me to take the leadership role in the club of being president; I started to lead the meetings and organize activities. It was also a chance for me to hear new ideas from other students and to bring them together.…
