Social media has taken full control of the way we go about living our lives. The power that it withholds over us determines who our “friends” are, plans what we are doing for every moment of our day and also has consumed us with false visions of the way we perceive our world. In Malcolm Gladwell’s article, “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted”, Gladwell discusses the negative side of pairing activism and social media together. Social media places activists in a negative light by their ability to hide behind a screen. Thus, this negative light that social media brings, also brings upon a negative light when counterfactually thinking. We have allowed ourselves to let social media define our past, present, and future, which in result has lead us to creating possible worlds in a dimmer light. In Alison Gopnik’s article, “Possible Worlds:…

One negative aspect of social media being readily available is that horrific things are instantly posted to the websites. Individuals will record an incident on their smart phones and post the videos, often times embarrassing the individuals in them. There have been numerous videos of fights or individuals doing pranks on complete strangers. Cyber bullying is a serious factor in social media use. According to White (2015), "twenty-five percent of teenagers report that they have experienced repeated bullying via their cell phone or the internet" (para. 3). Cyber bullying can have a massive effect on an individual. White (2015) states that bullying can cause depression, low self-esteem, school problems, loneliness, insecurity, substance abuse, and suicide (para. 4). Many people that play mean spirited pranks or bully people on line think that they are funny, they do not take the time to think about how their actions can affect the individual on the receiving end. Between the constant posts about cheating, and the drama about school fights, we see too much of one’s life online. Even when teenagers often feel connected to a friend’s feelings and life through social media, they also might feel that they are sometimes overly-connected to their friend’s lives. Many teens have witnessed others posting to social media about social gatherings that they weren’t even invited to. Some teenage social media users agree that people get to show different sides of themselves on social media that they cannot show offline. Some people oppose social networking, after saying that the sites can prevent real face-to-face communication. Others claim that it wastes time, and alters children’s behaviors, saying that it’s making them more prone to ADHD. Others are afraid for children’s safety, as predators like pedophiles pose as peers online.…

There has been a great controversy about if social media has made us closer or farther from each other. Social media is like a window that allows us to do things that in the past were just imagination and dreams, such as talking with people around the world, seeing them, making us feel as if we were there, but, does it make us less in contact with the actual things that surround us? Social media is everything where we can communicate with other people, even text messaging or calling someone is social media.…

One of the major problems of networking sites are that they can make people compare themselves to the people they see online. They might start to think less of their own lives. Users get to choose what part of themselves to display to the world on social media, and they may choose to show the fun and exciting part of their lives. This can cause people to become withdrawn and lonely. Teenagers also might become friends with individuals they don’t know very well or at all, and this presents the risk of teens being influenced by the wrong people. Even kids who are younger than teens are very much in danger from being affected by social media. Some potential problems posed by social media include “...cyber-bullying, sexting, and exposure to inappropriate content” (O’Keeffe, Clarke-Pearson). There is no limit to the things kids can see online. And there is no limit to what they can post. Social media shares a lot of sometimes private information, and that information can fall into the wrong hands. Most of all, social media provides an alternative to having face-to-face conversations. People can communicate with others without even leaving their homes. Human interaction plays an immense role in feelings of happiness and relaxation. It is vital to human health, both physically and mentally. Social media diminishes the need for actually talking to someone. Why…
