Many people believe that social media does not create isolation, simply because they are in their own little social media bubble and can’t see what’s going on around them, they choose to blind themselves by the fun they are having on their social media sites. While this position is popular, it is impractical. Even though social media is fun, it does create isolation by providing the illusion of companionship, and distracting from real life. Social Media provides the illusion of companionship by allowing people to maintain emotional distance with the illusion of intimacy. It provides virtual substitutes to actual friends and family. People use social media sites to show the highpoints of their lives and what their doing on a constant basis. This can quickly lead to fears of missing out, or that of unpopularity (elite daily, web). Daily, people are at work and school updating their statuses, posting photos, and snapping constantly. Not only does that distract them from their work but also from their friendships and all relationships. People have begun to place their value in how many followers they have on social media and they don’t feel the need to socialize with others face to face. People's minds are bogged down with useless tasks and information they see online.Not only that but, the brain is not capable of multitasking. Research shows your error rate goes up 50 percent and it takes you twice as long to do things when you are distracted. When you’re always online you’re always distracted, you don’t always know you’re distracted, it can be as simple as talking on the phone while walking down the street, but if you were on the scene and a murder happened you would only be able to recall the major details, no face recognition, no specific locations, nothing, that's just not the way the brain works (Chad Cribbs,
