The company is expanding into emerging markets and to sustain its rapid growth the organisation has recognised the need for strong leadership and management.

In addition to these external challenges, they have to deal with some internal problems such as:

Need for increasing the diversity and employment equity in the company High turnover rate.

To be able to get over these challenges, compete in the emerging markets and sustain their growth effectively there is a need for a strong leadership and management development programme which will help to prepare their leaders with the right competencies to meet the current challenges.

The main objective of this programme will be to develop 30 leaders who are fully engaged and aim to bring the best in the company. As the main needs of this leadership programme are to improve the engagement with staff, increase diversity and retention, and create a mission for global presence, a competency based approach to leadership will be followed. As McCauley (2006) stated, leadership competencies contribute to organisation performance and a competency based approach help organisations identify and develop their potential leaders.
