According to Freeman (2013), every day someone in that area is a victim of gun violence. According to FBI statistics, in 2012 Oakland with a population 395,817 was the fourth city in the U.S. with the highest homicide rate from guns. With gun homicides per 100,000 people: 27.3, and 108 gun homicides for that year (Freeman, 2013). The question is if gun control works, then why is it that the number one state in the U.S. on gun control has one of the highest rates of gun homicide. If the purpose of gun control is to save lives, it can clearly be seen that criminal behavior will not be affected because criminals have already made the decision to violate the law. According to the Oxford dictionary, the meaning of criminal is a person who has committed a crime. Some synonyms for criminal are felon, convict, delinquent, and the most important lawbreaker. Gun control laws exempt criminals and those with criminal intent. Most criminals are prone to or engaged in unlawful activity. He mentioned several cases in which people who were mentally unstable had guns and used them to harm other people. It is important to take into consideration all of the cases around the nation in which a man or woman shot and killed innocent people. Gun control does not decrease the murder rate, neither does it strip criminals of their firearms. It does not seem fair that the government will enforce gun control laws, but will not disarm criminals. In simple words, gun control will not solve the problem that is known as gun violence.
