Alcohol is estimated to be involved in up to half of partner violence in Australia with some statistics showing that 73% of partner physical assaults is because of alcohol. In 2010, alcohol was recorded as 41% of domestic assaults (NSW) this figure then increased to over 60% in remote areas far west of the state.

Professional Wayne Hall and Dr Megan Weier from the university of Queensland centre of youth substance abuse research made the call to federal and state governments to take responsibility and enforce action against alcohol related harm in an article published in the medical journal of Australia.
Alcohol consumption accounts for 28%of Australia’s road crashes, 24% of chronic liver disease and 23% of self-inflicted injury, this shows that a policy is desperately needed. Professor Hall said.

At the moment the alcohol industry has a licence to print money and the government picks up the cost that is relevant in the price of alcohol and the availability of alcohol for cheap prices.
Professor Hall suggested the state government look at reducing the opening hours of retail liquor outlets that, according to the paper, sell 80 % of all alcohol consumed.
"We have got pretty good evidence in Newcastle and New South Wales that the reduction in trading hours created a reduction of 20 to 30 per cent in alcohol-related harm around licensed premises," he
