Interpersonal Relationships In The Workplace

The biggest takeaway I have from our class time is the importance of interpersonal relationships in the workplace and how crucial dealing with people as more than just robotic workers really affects both work effort and efficacy. I have always been taught the importance of encouraging your workers, keeping an open environment, and analyzing team dynamics critically, but the class helped cement that both with examples and with actual situations that occurred in my groups. The biggest issues with these assignments weren’t difficulty however, it was …show more content…
I mentioned previously that I thought all work would be the same regardless of the person’s characteristics, that most assignments end up the same as once work starts, it would become robotic. I realized that because of the different motivations and interest that people have they don’t necessarily give 100% or think critically during their work process. It takes some mixture of encouragement and goal setting to truly reach people into putting in true effort into their work, and therefore attain better results no matter the challenge. This understanding of group dynamics is hard to wrap your head around, especially when you are in the middle of such group dynamics, but I’ve learned that’s it important if you want to fight off the negative aspects of group work, especially in larger groups. While I was initially aware of such a thing existing, it was hard to put into words before I started studying exactly what group dynamics entails for a leader and what the best way to influence different types of people was. This class has taught me that using one broad paint stroke to motivate or to accomplish work leaves people with work they can’t feel motivated to work hard at, or feel bothered to complete at all. It’s both important for a leadership position and for personal achievement that I should analyze how any dynamic is set up between me and others to better accomplish any goal set before

The main challenge of this group situation is that there was a sudden rise of conflict among members at the beginning to mid phase of the project. This resulted the possible development of groupthink (Janis, 2008). As a leader in this situation, I would firstly feel lousy and disappointed in myself that I didn’t take note of group’s division and how the meeting could be more inclusive of everyone’s opinion (Chadha, 2016). However, at that point, I would also probably feel confused but yet curious as to why it was suddenly voiced out, hence thought that I should facilitate to explicit the thoughts and feelings of each member to better understand as well.…

In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Introduction In this week’s reading assignment, Ott, Parkes, and Simpson (2008) introduces an assemblage of seven different readings from various theorists on the studies performed on groups and teams. The reading provides an understanding of how organizations can employ the expertise and originality of individuals into functioning efforts of groups. Also, three topic points, such as diversity, self-directed work teams, and virtual teams, offers additional interests in groups and teams that have taken center stage in literature during the 1990s and 2000s. When we work together we are able to get so much more done than we would be able to do just by ourselves. In contrast, some negative effects of groupthink is the fact it discourages individual responsibility and creativity. When we work alone we are able to focus on strengthening and carrying out our own ideas, but when we are in a group we are influenced by other people’s ideas and how them might be better or worse than our own. Also when we work alone we must be responsible to get the task done or find a solution for something in a timely and neat manner. Also when we work as a group this could create fighting such as when Hathorne says, “Why do you hurt these children?”…

After watching the presentation on team work and being in groups, it taught me the things that are necessary in order for a group to be successful. In order to be successful in a group, the group needs to plan everything out in advance, they need to communicate, and have a leader who can take the initiative. Notably when watching the presentation some of the observations I recognized included planning everything within the first two meetings. Throughout the presentation they did not say which member received which roles, or even set a proper meeting time.…

The purpose of this particular activity was to allow group members who did not know each other the opportunity to work with one another to complete the task of building the tallest free-falling tower in exactly one minute or less. The reason why I believe this task was given to us was to display Tuckman's five stages of group development and to show how these stages are relevant in our lives and not another concept you learn in class that is not applicable in life. As a group, we went through all of Tuckman's stages which will be well explained in the following paragraphs. As mentioned before, nobody in the group knew each other which caused a feeling of awkwardness that soon dispelled as time gradually progressed.…

Group projects require effort from each team member. There is a fear of not getting along with everyone and of members not doing their part to their best ability. That is why it is important for one member to take leadership position, understand the stages of team development, and to assign each member a task to show individual importance to the team. Let us start with the introduction of Christine Spencer, who is a dedicated student that does not focus solely on skills and knowledge for a competitive edge, but maintaining an A-average, as well. (Schermerhorn, Osborn, Uhl-Bien, & Hunt, 2012) In a group project in Christine’s organizational behavior course, she was assigned as group leader for a very diverse group.…

Reflection Paper II Throughout my college experience here in the Carroll School of Management, group work and the ability to work well with others has been emphasized greatly. This makes sense, because in a professional environment, the ability to communicate, listen and contribute within a group leads to success and the achievement of goals. However, none have gone on as long as this project, making it a more realistic example of working on a team. Junior year of college is definitely a crazy time, as we are forced to balance heavy workloads with extracurriculars and recruiting.…

Dan Rothwell, pp 276). 3 out of 5 group members were only focused on finishing their portion of the work, which complicated the whole project because it has to be done by the member who proposed the change. Low participation is the problem I felt that we encounter in this group project. I was fully motivated, and willing to spend more time with it; however, not all members were doing effective communications to follow through.…
