Guns in America As Americans guns are our pastime, it has given us a way to feed and protect our families for decades (Five 1). Doreen Gonzales believes around the date 1607 the first colonist journeyed onto American soil with firearms (11). Guns have been molded into the American way of life and culture with their constant presence on television, movies, and in the news. There are currently enough guns in the United States that roughly every man, woman, and child could own one. Guns have constantly been in the headlines with around 22 mass shootings and 20 regular shootings each year, the question now is if gun control is the answer to end all the gun violence (Deadliest 1)? The US government thinks it will decrease gun violence, but studies have proved that gun control is ineffective (Pro 2). Gun control was put into action in Australia and robberies, assaults, murders, and home invasions all increased (Australian 1). Police officers all over the country were asked how they feel about gun control because when it comes to decreasing gun violence in America, no one else in the country has anything close to the experience that cops do, they are the men and women on the streets who witness gun violence close up and put their lives on the line. 91% of respondents say guns have zero negative effect in reducing violent crimes (Police 1). 86% of people believe mass shootings and regular shootings could’ve been prevented if a bystander had a firearm (Police 3). Various police officers and responders believe if no one was able to obtain a firearm you would have to call 9-1-1 and by the time they arrive it would simply be too late (Police 2). Gun control won’t keep a gun out of the hands of criminals, nearly 76% of criminals obtain an illegal gun when committing the crime. (Pro 5). We need to have mandatory sentences for people who commit a crime with a firearm. (Does 3) A firearm is a police officer’s tool just like a hammer for a carpenter. The Second Amendment, public officials, and police officers everywhere believe gun aren’t the problem, however stricter and more effective laws will help control gun
