Solar Power
As of the end of the past century, and now the beginning of the current century, the primary energy sources being used have been harmful to our environment, and are nonrenewable. These energy sources are not going to be on earth forever, so it would be beneficial to mankind to find a new primary source of energy to replace the old ones. Solar power is one of the most abundant energy sources we have on Earth, and each year it is becoming more and more popular. With the technological advances in the modern world, solar power energy has the potential to become a primary source of energy for the population living in the Twenty-first century because it can be used in any platform,

One of the most popular platforms that use solar power energy is the installation of solar panels in homes. The concept of harvesting the sun’s rays and turning them into energy has been present for a long time, but in 1767 Swiss scientist Horace de Saussure was credited with building the first solar collector. (U.S Department of Energy) Since then, the development of solar power energy has increased dramatically. Today some well-known corporations such as The Home Depot support the usage of solar power energy by selling solar panels in their stores worldwide. (U.S Department of Energy) Other companies such as BP have used Solar panels to support their use of energy since the year 2000. (BP) In 2013 it was projected that about 400,000 homes in the United States alone had solar panels installed in their homes, and it is estimated that anywhere from 900,000 to 3.8 million homes in the United States will count with solar panels in their roofs by the year 2020. (Wisland) According to an online source, “The production of a solar panel starts out by slicing crystalline silicon into tiny disks that are then polished and treated to repair the damage done by the slicing. Afterwards, materials that are added to alter an electrical charge in a semiconductor or photovoltaic solar cell, along with metal conductors are …show more content…
The production needed to develop the forms of energy that can be produced by solar power energy are now being massed produced making them less expensive, and generally decreasing the price of solar power energy itself. (Greene) Prices for harvesting solar energy were high because demand was low, and the materials used were expensive, but as the popularity in solar power energy beings to increase the cost to harvest it decreases accordingly. Scientist are now developing new methods to process different forms of solar power energy to use for various purposes. Using forms of solar power automatically becomes beneficial because it helps lower the cost of electric bills. As discussed before solar panels contain photovoltaic cells that get transformed into electricity. This electricity then goes into the inverter which is used to turn the direct current electricity into 120-volt alternating current. This makes the electricity readily available and is sent to connect to the circuit breaker. A circuit breaker is an automatic device for stopping the flow of current in an electric circuit. (Harris) The electricity produced will then be consumed by the electrical needs being used. (NW Wind and Solar) There is a lot of savings involved with using this type of energy. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, “Squeezing every last penny of

Many ideas and inventions have been used to make the use of our resources more efficient. Using solar power is one way we are using energy that is already there to our advantage. It is becoming more affordable, easier to obtain, and more popular within the country. Just in the past eight years alone, incorporation of solar power has increased from 1.2 gigawatts to thirty gigawatts (“Solar”). To give an example of the impact this has, that is enough energy to power about 5.7 million households in America. Solar power is slowly becoming a more reasonable alternative to have because it is becoming more accessible. In the past six years, the cost of solar panels has gone down by about sixty percent…

There are two types of solar panels that are used one is photovoltaic and then there is solar thermal. They both work by turning the suns energy into usable energy. Geo-Exchange technology has been utilized since the late 1940’s. It is clean and efficient and renewable from natural heat inside the heat. Most states have a very hot season and a very cold season a few feet below the earth surface it is cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Geothermal heat pumps take advantage of the temperature difference by exchange heat with earth and are able to heat and cool and even provide hot water. These systems are very expensive and this is one of the negative thing of this energy sources. Hydropower is the next one we are learning about. Hydroelectric generation use to be a stable for energy whenever there was a river or a fast-moving stream. There are a lot of Dams that are used for this some big ones like the Hoover Dam. They use more the 40% of the total U.S. hydroelectric power. Connecticut has many small ones that they use all over the state. The Bigger the drop the more energy it will produce. That is why places like Kansas there is not many Hydroelectric power. This is Connecticut’s renewable energy…

The discovery of PV, photovoltaics, happened in 1839, a researcher found that certain materials could produce energy if exposed to light. This discovery later led to photovoltaic cells being produced as a type of energy production. The cells were not viable until space researchers/engineers realized that PV cells would be a good way to produce electricity in space. That led to more research and therefor less cost because it was being made better with every discovery. The first space station to use solar arrays, lots of modules wired together, was the I.S.S. Space station, which had arrays with 14% efficiency. The highest current known efficiency is up to 35% on certain arrays under concentrated sunlight. Research is currently being done on Gallium Arsenide and concentration of sunlight/other light because the current highest efficiency cell was made with these two factors. Researchers are also looking for where solar energy no longer would work as a viable power source for a space shuttle or…

Solar power is a newer source of energy and it is becoming very popular and it’s a great source of energy. Solar power is renewable because the sun is always going to be there. It can be sporadic because of the weather and the sun is not out at night, but you can store energy that you have collected through the panels in large batteries so that you have power to use at night time. The downsides to solar power are that if you do not have batteries that can hold a lot of energy and there is a huge storm or is cloudy for several days you may not get power for whatever you need it for. It is also extremely expensive to put into place; however, it is getting cheaper as time goes on and it can pay for itself just by helping your electricity bill go down. While it is a clean source of energy it causes pollution to make because of the process it takes in the factories to make it.…

The most important thing about the energy from the sun, as stated in the periodical Renewable Alternative energy sources, Renewable energy sources can be replenished in a single human lifetime, rather than over many lifetimes, as with oil or coal. (Renew) Solar energy is also sustainable, since it cannot be over used or harmful to future generations. Harnessing solar energy can cause pollution, but compared to the amount of pollution from more conventional energy sources, this amount is next to nothing. Solar energy is available for everyone in the world, some places do not get as much sunlight therefore cannot convert as much energy, but it can still be used for personal needs. Solar panels can also save people a considerable amount of money in energy bills. Home owners can save as much has over a hundred dollars a month in many states. (Energy) Solar energy is also considered to be the people’s power since they can be set up quick on the consumer level, and they are also quiet, since there are no moving parts. If a person does not want a solar panel on top of their hours, but still wants to benefit from solar power, then it is as easy has finding to see if any homes or private businesses are sharing the electricity that they have stored up. This way people can pay a fixed lower rate for electricity. The government also gives incentives or rebates for using a cleaner resource of energy, which cut some…

Photovoltaic energy has come a long way since its inception, and it will keep becoming more viable with its continued adoption. According to Bloomberg, solar prices have gone down significantly since 1977, and are projected to continue to decline well past the price of coal and oil per kilowatt hour (Randall). When solar energy is cheaper than coal, solar will be put in ubiquitously, because it will be cheaper for the consumer to finance solar panels than to pay an electricity bill. Not only is the price dropping, but the efficiency is increasing. As solar panels become more heavily adopted, the technology developing them becomes more refined. The first solar panels were designed with an eight percent efficiency rating, whereas panels created today have efficiencies hovering around 30 to 35 percent (Rowley). 30-35 percent may not seem incredible, but it is a four fold increase in energy production. Every year PV cells become less expensive and more efficient. Combined, these yearly improvements in price and efficiency will make photovoltaic cells a fantastic contender to kick fossil fuels off of their high…

Solar power is a form of renewable energy that is beneficial to the consumer. The government is well aware of the public’s concern to reduce high energy cost while the overall need for energy has increased. It is argued that switching to solar power will cost the consumer more and also be more of an embarrassment for them to have bulky technology attached to their homes. However, this statement was disproven through the Sustainable Energy Resources for Consumers Grants (SERC) study. SERC was created to analyze the benefits of renewable energy technologies. Through the use of these grants, renewable energy systems that focused on solar…

Solar cells are devices that convert sunlight into electricity. The uses of solar cells may seem more familiar than you may think so. They are used in solar panels, satellites, and in solar farms where solar energy are harvested in huge quantities. Solar cells are important because they allow for another type of energy source, a renewable source unlike its counterpart the fossil fuel. However, even though renewable energy source sounds good, it’s far too expensive for commercial use. The reason to that is because solar cells require a lot of material in the manufacturing process for the solar cell to be considered efficient. For example, the most efficient solar cell is one of the most expensive because “the only problem is that silicon does not absorb sunlight as efficiently as other materials, so silicon solar cells need to be 10-100(s) of times thicker…
