Solar power, simply put, is energy that comes from sunlight. Solar energy is used to power things such as streetlights, homes, or even smaller things such as calculators. Many people have switched to solar energy to power their home’s electrical appliances, as it is commonly believed that solar energy is better for the planet. While solar energy does provide us with energy without burning fossil fuels, there are also other effects on the planet. Before understanding how solar energy impacts the earth, one must understand how solar panels work in the first place.
Solar panels are generally used to provide energy for the average household. According to Source A, “A solar panel works by allowing photons or particles of light to knock electrons

Solar energy is not as helpful and innovative as one might believe. A helpful quote from
Source B says, “Solar power is not a constant source of energy” (Source B). Generally, solar panels tend to do their aforementioned job when there is sunlight, or a form of light ray. If neither of these things are present, the panels cannot do their job, therefore they are not able to provide the sufficient amount of energy needed for normal activities to continue. Another quote from the same source states, “The production of solar panels themselves produces large amounts of greenhouse gases” (Source B). While solar panels may be saving the world from the burning of fossil fuels, the making of the actual panels that are supposed to be doing that is causing a bigger issue. Greenhouse gases can lead to larger scale issues on the planet, such as global warming. To add to this list, Source C says, “We need the ability to store the energy for long periods of time when the sun is dark...and the solar panels don’t work” (Source C).

This action can create temperatures up to 3,630 degrees Fahrenheit, the heat can be used to make steam and then used to create electricity at power plants. Solar cells, another device used for making electricity, rely on the photoelectric effect which is the ability of matter to emit electrons when a light is shone on it. These electrons are then moved into an electric current, using silicon semi-conductors, to power satellites, calculators, and everything in between. Solar energy seems to be like an easy solution to the energy crisis right? Wrong, solar energy is unable to convert sunlight to energy efficiently nor at a reasonable cost.…

Many ideas and inventions have been used to make the use of our resources more efficient. Using solar power is one way we are using energy that is already there to our advantage. It is becoming more affordable, easier to obtain, and more popular within the country. Just in the past eight years alone, incorporation of solar power has increased from 1.2 gigawatts to thirty gigawatts (“Solar”). To give an example of the impact this has, that is enough energy to power about 5.7 million households in America.…

Solar powered photovoltaic (PV) panels collect solar energy. These panels consist of small cells that are wired together to form the module, and the modules are then wired together to form the panels. When a bunch of panels is located together, this is called an array (Davison). These arrays then absorb solar radiation and converts energy to electricity. During the collection of solar energy, no greenhouse gas emission is released.…

Coal is a nonrenewable resource. Energy is made when the coal is burned, a machine called pulverized grinds the coal into a fine powder, then powder mixes in a boiler creating steam. Steam released from the boiler powers an engine called a turbine transforming heat into energy from burning coal in to mechanical energy that spins the turbine engine then used to power a generator. Coal is used for many different things mainly heating, cooling, cooking, transportation, farming. Wind is a renewable resource mainly wind is used as a resource through a wind turbine.…
