Adapted Physical Education (APE) is developed for a learner with a disability, in order to implement them into PE classes with students who do not have disabilities. This is mandated by federal law so that students with disabilities receive physical education to develop the motor skills that are essential to their lives through physical activity. Changes that are made for the students with disabilities in these classes are based on the type of disability that the student suffers from and accommodates their needs. APE also includes Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) as well as the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for the students with disabilities. Inclusion is a key reason on how Adaptive Physical Education works well in a PE class. For students with disabilities it is important that they actively incorporated to some extent with the students in the class who do not have disabilities. This allows these students to develop better social skills and to work together regardless of a disability. For a student to be supported by an adapted physical education class they must be diagnosed with one of twelve disabilities: physical education and they are blindness, traumatic brain injury, mental …show more content…
Students who suffer from these disabilities need PE classes to help them develop the proper motor skills that they will need to continue to stay physically fit and and lead them down the path for health and wellness. The teacher of APE classes has a great amount of responsibility and must make sure that the students are working to achieve the objectives and benchmarks set for them in a timely manner. The use of equipment is also a key part of APE classes and helps the students who suffer from disabilities participate in modified lesson plans based on the instructions listed in their

In Overcoming the Barriers to Including Students With Visual Impairments and Deaf-Blindness in Physical Education, author Lauren J. Lieberman and Cathy Houston Wilson suggests some of the barriers teachers today face about the lack of resources towards deaf-blindness students. It is difficult to provide support for students with disability to participant in physical activities. “Unfortunately, students who are blind or deaf-blind are not afforded the same opportunities to participate in regular physical activity and do not attain the same psychological, social, and physical benefits as their sighted peers” (Sherrill qt. in Lieber and Wilson “Overcoming the Barriers”). Most schools do not have the ability to provide the same opportunity for those students to be able to engage in activities as the “normal” students. Deaf-blind students require visual-motor skills in order for them to engage well in physical activities.
