Essay On Physical Education Observation

Improved Essays
I had the ability to observe a physical education class co-taught by Ms. Mussell and Ms. Potts. This fifty-minute physical education class at Saint Anthony Middle School was an insightful experience. The Saint Anthony Middle School is attached to the high school, but is distinctly separated. The drive to Saint Anthony school district was not lengthy at all; it is located within welcoming residential area. Upon entering the school, I observed a diverse student population. The school offers a large variety of clubs and extra curricular activities, is an open enrolled school district, and offers support for academics and health if needed. The school population is a mix of Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Asian American, and Muslim students. …show more content…
Mussell and Ms. Potts demonstrated an effectively controlled physical education class. It was clear that the women had established a clear routine and expectations for their classes prior to the observed class. During the lesson, the teachers demonstrated effective classroom management by having students sit in the center of the gym while instructions were being given. When splitting up into teams the students were instructed to stand on a line in the gym, then they were counted off to make two teams; this was an effective and time efficient strategy for the lesson. Expectations for appropriate behavior and play were established in the instructions for the day, and these were effectively reinforced by both teachers throughout the activity. Few reminders had to be given about rules or behavior, therefore the management of the class was completely effective. I did not witness any ineffective classroom management techniques during this physical education class. Ineffective classroom management could have resulted in a chaotic and potentially dangerous activity in the class, so providing effective management is essential. In regards to teaching the lesson, the co-taught activity was efficient. When one teacher was talking, the other was attentive and quiet, setting an example of proper listening. During the game, one teacher explained the rules and the other offered other strategic insight to get the students thinking. The teachers reminded students of the objectives they

Have you noticed that Physical Education seems to be a narrowing field? I strongly believe that there is a reason we need to keep PE in schools and in society today. Unfortunately, I feel as though many of the educators and teachers today aren’t taking it seriously. They aren’t doing enough to help the students become physically active, instead, the teachers just sit there because it is a job to them, nothing more. If the teachers had a better personal philosophy on what they actually want to teach, then I feel like PE would be a much stronger field and everyone would want it around.…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

Last term our physical education periods revolved around preparing ourselves for a mountain biking camp in Hanmer Springs. In these periods we would bike as a class through the skinny tracks of North Hagley, the tough up and down hills next to the Avon River and around the rough grounds of Hagley. These rides helped us prepare emotionally and physically for the upcoming rides that happened in Hanmer as we worked on the two responsible behaviors for safety, which includes compliance with instructions and appropriate communication. Learning about these two responsible behaviors boosted our confidence more as we became more familiar with the bike and had a little bit of knowledge going into the camp as Mr. Bilsbury took us on challenging rides.…

Essentially, SPARK has created a successful alternative Physical Education (PE) program aimed at increasing physical fitness levels that teachers, schools, and afterschool programs can then purchase online to implement in their classrooms (SPARK, 2015). Segal (2009) highlights SPARK as a “model program” because of its novel coordination of high activity curriculum, physical education equipment, and professional development to enhance teacher effectiveness (p. 42) What is really unique about SPARK is that all individuals or organizations who utilize a SPARK program are supported by a SPARK program coordinator, ensuring their success (p. 42). McKenzie (2001) examined the effectiveness of a SPARK program in comparison to a traditional PE in increasing physical activity in a middle school setting. The comparison school held a PE class three times a week, had no club sports, and had a built environment that didn’t support physical activity (McKenzie, 2001, p. 233).…

For this practicum assignment I chose my co-teacher Scott McCandless. The reason I chose this person to do this assignment is because as a fellow physical educator I have both content and pedagogical knowledge in order to provide an in depth analysis of his teaching. Scott has been teaching physical education for five years and this is his first year at Pleviak. Each class that we teach has anywhere from around thirty-six to fifty-two kindergarten students. Depending on the time we might have a combination of; one class that is a monolingual general education and the other class a bilingual education, or a monolingual general education and a special education class with one teacher assistant for the students who have disabilities.…

Response to Lauren It is very true that it is always easier to write about something you know well, like about your life and personal experiences. When the topic is not familiar to students, then they need to do research to stimulate their writing. It is important to show ELLs how to do research and how to use it, so students start getting more confident and less scare about a blank paper. Response to Ana Villanueva I am happy that my students in physical education class are not the only ones that complain about writing in class that is not English language arts.…
