For this practicum assignment I chose my co-teacher Scott McCandless. The reason I chose this person to do this assignment is because as a fellow physical educator I have both content and pedagogical knowledge in order to provide an in depth analysis of his teaching. Scott has been teaching physical education for five years and this is his first year at Pleviak.
Each class that we teach has anywhere from around thirty-six to fifty-two kindergarten students. Depending on the time we might have a combination of; one class that is a monolingual general education and the other class a bilingual education, or a monolingual general education and a special education class with one teacher assistant for the students who have disabilities. I chose the case study of Kimika Kanzia to complete my annual IEP requirement for EDUC-614. Kimika was a 9 year old girl with moderate intellectual disabilities, a seizure disorder and a gross motor impairment. Kimika had been receiving special education in the early childhood special education program since she was three years old due to her education deficits and gross motor impairment. At that time, she was found to have significant language, academic and motor delays. The case study reported that during preschool she made slow but steady progress and over the next few years she was moved to a classroom for students with “trainable mental retardation”.…

Special Education Policy Case Review There are four sources of law in the United States, one of which is the rulings of judicial courts (Russo & Osborne, 2008). It’s these court trials and judicial opinions that determine how legislation is to be interpreted and applied because at times, legislation is ambiguous or broad or may not necessarily take into account the affects of preexisting legislation. As with all other types of legislation, lawsuits regarding special education occur and it’s the result of these laws that have determined how the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is interpreted and implemented. Three cases, Doug C. v. Hawaii, PV v. Philadelphia, and Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District are recent cases…

Hello there! Last year I left my previous, mostly unrelated profession with the idea that I wanted to pursue a Special Education Teaching Credential. I took a position as an Instruction Assistant in an upper elementary class as I had never been in a Sped class and wanted to spend some time in one to make sure that it was where I wanted to be before I started investing in a credentialing program. Overall, I have loved every day of it thus far.…

Prior to 1975, when the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) was passed, the needs of children with disabilities were highly overlooked. According to the Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (2010), “U.S. schools educated only one in five children with disabilities, and many states had laws excluding certain students from school, including children who were deaf, blind, emotionally disturbed, or mentally retarded.” The discrimination and lack of educational rights for children with disabilities was a vast social problem and detrimental to the lives and worth of children with disabilities and their families. In an effort to address this social problem and provide equal access to education…

Mr. Bradbury works at the same high school I coach baseball at so I have a pretty good relationship with him. I was very fortunate to observe Mr. Bradbury because he has been teaching physical education for over 10 years now and he gave me so much information that will help me become a successful teacher one day. I observed Mr. Bradbury on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. The class I observed was a team sports class and it was during 5th period which started at 12:55 and ended at 1:55.…

Introduction Special education has made significant changes over the past years, partly due to the fact that people have stood up and made a change for the better toward children with disabilities. Children are no longer put into segregated hospitals and left to die and forgotten about. Children for many years were labeled as unlovable and a disgrace and hid away from society. Parents were faced with humiliation and public scorning for having a child with a disability and lived in fear. People are now more widely educated and have advanced over the past century to include children with disabilities as part of society and not simply a disgrace to be swept under the rug.…

Physical education curriculum provides an indispensable opportunity in the establishment of physical literacy, however the aim of PL is to move beyond specific proficiency in specific activities to inclusiveness of all abilities and focuses on competencies in a variety of movements and environments. The internationally accepted definition of PL is “the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life” (Whitehead, 2013). Whitehead’s PL model has three key components: behavioral, psychological, and physical. Although interrelated, the behavioral component plays a role in the realization of potential by enabling individuals to invest the requisite…

Before taking this course and being out in the field for 20 hours, special education was not my ideal teaching job. Special education was always intimidating to me because there is so much important information that is needed. IEP’s, parents, and goal setting are just a few to name that intimidated me until now. After getting to experience being in a special education room with the students and asking Nicole Degroot questions about these topics, I now I feel that special education may be the positon for me. From the first day of my observation hours, Mrs. Degroot made me feel completely welcome and comfortable, which made the experience that much better.…
