With physical and emotional vulnerability, working with patients while shadowing an oncology nurse at a local hospital made me aware of these obstacles. By professionally caring for our patient’s physical needs while calming and treating them with sympathy as worthy humans, this nurse made me aware that caring requires both physical and emotional compassion. Along with shadowing nurses, the main course of action I found my passion for caring, teaching and advocating for others was through my work as a Water Safety Instructor, or WSI. As a WSI, my main job description is to plan, coordinate, and teach swimming and water safety techniques to individuals of all ages while applying life-saving lifeguard techniques.
