In the past twenty years, information systems have driven business transformation with these characteristics: * Flattening * Decentralization * Flexibility * Location independence * Low transaction and coordination costs * Empowerment * Collaborative work and teamwork * Work-flow reorganization * Organizations without boundaries
Constant and rapid change describes the business environment we have come to accept.
Process reengineering in the early 1990s had a major impact on business information systems and was the driver of this movement to improve workflows, thereby reducing unnecessary activities in the enterprise and utilizing information technology to enhance productivity. The organization was flattened because levels of management that had previously gathered and interpreted data for senior management were no longer needed. Data was readily available for management decision making. Pushing decision making down to the lowest level possible, thereby empowering employees to make decisions, was another factor in flattening the enterprise.
Clerical workers were no longer needed because the lower level tasks were automated, a change that significantly reduced transaction costs. Better decisions could be made because of better information and
