Professor Malchodi EN 102 Life Passages class focused on life passages, or the transition from one stage of life to another. Many of the stories were about transition between childhood and adulthood and were relatable because I am also in that transition.
At the beginning of my freshman year, I created a guiding question that will follow me throughout my four year of college. My question, “What is the relationship between personality and behavior?” relates to the class because I gained insight into other characters’ transitions from childhood to adulthood, which allowed me to grow my view on life. My guiding question inquiries how someone’s unique personality affects their behavior. The question stemmed from my curiosity on why I chose my career path and how my personality makes that industry the best for me to work in. The story is set in 1960s, and Queenie and her friends are wearing bathing suits in the grocery store. If this story was written today, it would be highlighting the sexualization of girls, and Donald Trump’s view on women. There would be an uproar that girls in bathing suits are treated differently than men in bathing suits because of their natural figures. In Sherman Alexie’s “An Indian Education” the narrator goes through thirteen years of schooling and bullying. Alexie is mainly bullied for his ethnicity and being different from the white kids at school. The white teachers do not respect him or his parents, and the family is left fighting as the minority. This is similar to the past Black Lives Matter Campaign, and the recent ethnicity awareness since Trump’s travel ban.
