“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try”. The students of the Adult Basic Education School at Lincoln Community Center are the most diligent, hardworking, amazing people I have ever gotten the privilege to meet. As I chose to volunteer teaching English as a second language, this was the most rewarding experience I have ever encountered. I have learned more than I have ever hoped for. I have encompassed many skills that I will be able to use the rest of my life. The students attend the school to learn because they want to, they understand it is a privilege to receive an education. The students do not take advantage of school, they try their hardest and are ready to better their lives and the community. Often times people take advantage of our basic skills of reading and writing. People expect everyone in America to speak English, although that isn’t realistic. America is the melting pot of the world and the different languages is what makes our country so important.
