As such, it is important to realize that with so many team members involved that specialize in different areas, the team can be classified as a cross-functional team, as described by Bovée &Toll (2016). To take advantage of the rich knowledge pool, good communication between all members is an essential requirement. Moreover, the team is committed, passionate and share a common goal of assisting the child to reach his full potential with the help of quality interventions. However, within the team, each team member has a specific function. As a parent, it is my duty to advocate for my children to receive all the services that I know that they require. At the other end of the scale is the Special Education team that has to balance limited resources with the team’s common goal of creating a plan that caters to the needs of the child. By resolving the conflict that exists between the need to provide a quality service for the child and balancing the limited available resources, we can move forward as a team and ultimately achieve our goal of creating a quality intervention plan for each …show more content…
According to Brislin & Yoshida (1994), “When people communicate across cultures, they are at a disadvantage. Often they do not hold the same values, nor have they undergone similar socialization experiences. Therefore, when they communicate, an unusual amount of sensitivity is necessary” (p. 91). As such, to cultivate effective communication among team members, the team can follow the guidelines given by Bovée & Toll (2016), that says that a person should be sensitive to the other member’s culture heritage and be willing to accommodate and be open to the differences among the cultures. From personal experience, I have found that if I give enough context to the message I am trying to convey, the team members understand the message within the context that I provided rather than the context that they would assign to the message based on their cultural experiences. As we continue to work together, our shared experiences create a stronger bond. Clear, concise, and effective exchanges that filled with patience and understanding in turn builds trust among team members and cultivates strong team unity regardless of our different
