Stephen King's Memoir 'On Writing'

An idea that I found important in Stephen King's memoir "On Writing" is his statement "stopping a piece of work just because it's hard, either emotionally or imaginatively, is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don't feel like it, and sometimes you're doing good work when it feels like all you're managing is to shovel shit from a sitting position." Personally, I found this statement inspiring. Often, I find myself creating excuses which keep me from writing. This is often because I believe a certain topic is hard to write about, or I am not particularly interested in my subject. Despite how I know my procrastination does not create any progress, it happens. King reiterates the fact that bad writing is better than no writing. Like

As individuals that are rather fond of the concept of perfection, we tend to minimize the fact that it is simply a concept and maximize its actuality. As a result of this fault, we expect for things that require multiple tries to come out as perfect and the outcome often leads to disappointment. A great example of this would be the writing process--most people believe that great writing is the result of one being gifted. That a person can just wake up one evening and write their best work without any effort. This misconception often leads to individuals discouraged to write and create myths about the process of writing.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

Writing is different for everyone. We all have interesting stories to tell. If there is one thing that is true for every writer, it is that we all have an inner critic. Allegra Goodman advises writers how to get past their inner critic in her article, “Calming the Inner Critic and Getting to Work”. Silencing my inner judgments can be one of the most challenging parts of writing, but once the critic is silenced something magical and therapeutic emerges.…
