Personal Narrative: My Struggle With Writing

Improved Essays
Who doesn’t struggle with writing? I know I always have struggled with writing, for the longest time I didn’t even really understand the differences in sentences, and it is something that’s still confuses me a little bit. To be completely honest I sometimes procrastinate longer than I should when it comes to writing, so I don’t always review the finished product the way I should. Life gets in the way occasionally, and I attempt to convince myself that I have plenty of time to finish they assignment. This particularly gave me problems in high school. I learned my lesson when I arrived at college though, I tried to procrastinate so I could have more of a social life than I did in high school, and let’s just say it ended up biting me in the butt …show more content…
Two similar themes of the books are facing your fears and becoming the person you were meant to be. Castillo grew up as an outcast being a Latina in Chicago, though I am Caucasian I faced some of the same things. Growing up in San Antonio, Texas calls for a lot of diversity around you, and a lot of the time I was one of the few white kids in my class. There are a lot of Mexicana people in S.A. so most of my classmates and friends were Mexican. This made it more difficult growing up and things were a lot different for my compared to other white kids. I am who I am today because of where I grew up and I wouldn’t change that for the world. Chodron has taught me that I can’t run from my fears I have to face them head on, run at them, and tackle them to the ground. This is what I am trying to do with my writing, so that I can be a successful writer. They also have both taught me that you never what the people around you are going through or have gone through, though this is something I have always been taught it is a good reminder. Not knowing what people are experiencing means you don’t know how your bad attitude will affect them, but if you go through life trying to help people you will be better

Unless I have a very strict and short deadline, my writing process begins with thinking and reading about the topic or subject matter of my paper. I don’t do a structured free writing or idea mapping session, but rather just read a bit to get familiar with the subject matter and to get my brain thinking about the subject. Once I am ready to begin writing. I start with the thesis statement is on the topic, is formatted correctly, and matches the purpose of the essay.…

My writing process usually involves me prewriting, planning, drafting and then editing. I often try to revise the paper while I’m writing it, which often seems to create more problems as I stop my thought process on what I was writing and focus on something else. While this has slowed me down, it has never stopped me from finishing something. I have always had an easy time writing in an environment where I don’t have any tight restrictions and can write freely about ideas for characters, stories, and worlds. I usually have trouble coming up with the right words when I’m required to write about very specific topics or ideas.…

When I was younger, I would eat up books faster than I got them. I’d frequently been caught reading books in the zaniest of places. I remember wanting to try writing, although I could never fully convey the words in my mind onto paper. Every once in a blue moon when I was able to; only I could understand what I wrote. It had fascinated me, and honestly frustrated me, that people could write these whimsical and arcane books that I’d held onto like a mother to her child.…

I wasn’t overly excited about taking English 102 this semester and often felt overwhelmed by the writing assignments. This year, there is one critique I remember clearly: the night after the first parent-teacher conference, my parents told me about my teachers’ comments and suggestions for improvement. When we began to discuss my critiques in terms of English, my mom stated that my writing ‘needed to be more polished,’ and ‘be careful about staying on topic.’ I was, frankly, quite stunned--I had always believed that organization was one of my strong points, and being told that I needed to focus more on my main points shocked me out of my reverie. I believe that this critique helped improve my writing the rest of the year; when I was writing my midterm, I kept it in my mind when choosing my words and organizing my sentences. I have learned quite a few other things this year, including annotation, and various types of writing.…
