Personal Narrative: My Critique Of My Writing

This year, there is one critique I remember clearly: the night after the first parent-teacher conference, my parents told me about my teachers’ comments and suggestions for improvement. When we began to discuss my critiques in terms of English, my mom stated that my writing ‘needed to be more polished,’ and ‘be careful about staying on topic.’ I was, frankly, quite stunned--I had always believed that organization was one of my strong points, and being told that I needed to focus more on my main points shocked me out of my reverie. I believe that this critique helped improve my writing the rest of the year; when I was writing my midterm, I kept it in my mind when choosing my words and organizing my sentences. I have learned quite a few other things this year, including annotation, and various types of writing. Learning how to annotate effectively has helped me procure meaning from many texts, and has aided me when writing my analytical essays. While I have certainly written analytical essays before, I believe that I have learned how to vastly improve my techniques and sentence structure this year. I often plan three points to expand upon in my essays--however, I tend to realise later I don’t have enough ideas to expand upon in a paragraph. This leads to many writing blocks, and hinders my writing process. In the future, I intend to practice writing in different forms to improve the my writing style and techniques, and learn to plan my points more effectively. As well, I want to learn how to better recognize my mistakes. When I reread some of my pieces the past few days, I immediately see many mistakes that could be improved. Next year, I want to finish each of my pieces early, and then reread it the next day to look at them with fresh eyes; to better see my mistakes and improve upon
