Before I turned in memoir number one in college comp, I had confidence in my writing. I attended comp last semester, and developed adequate writing skills for the class. My confidence level nose-dived, and I experienced a wave of depression. The unfortunate grade evoked a feeling of anger towards myself. I believed I had improved my writing skills tenfold since last semester, but I realized each comp teacher has a different grading style. My previous comp teacher, for example, still graded to fail students, but I began to pass my memoirs towards the end of the semester. I conceived of my ability

The day we expected to get our assignments back, I felt calm and confident. When I received my paper and saw what my grade was and the comments my teachers made, my whole mood changed. The grade and the remarks were nothing of what I expected, and the grade was well below what I normally score. After this assignment I started to give up because I did not think I would ever do as good and that my writing, in fact, did not improve at all, but Mrs. Moore told me not give up and to keep trying. The talk we had made me realize that I need to learn from this experience and continue to work hard and do my absolute best.…

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

I was awakened from my wrongful interpretations on reading and the craft of writing. I did not dislike reading, but it was the type of writing that I loathed. To this day, I am grateful for my accidental ignorance because this book was the spark that started my stream of memoir readings. I admit that my original decision to attend Binghamton University was impetuous. From the simultaneous rejections…

I didn’t know what I was in for after that day. A writer’s key experiences is what makes them different from other writers and is crucial to their growth as a writer. The writing I composed in Mrs. Heningburg’s class was central to my development as a writer because it made me more confident in my writing and made me more aware of others reading my work as a writer. After hearing my last writing assignment's result in the class, I started expecting a high scoring on my writing works. When I was first accepted to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, I did not know what adventures were going to come my way. I did not know what adversities were going to show themselves to me unsuspectingly. I knew I would face these adversities and I knew I would grow from them. This adversity in college has also presented itself in this English course by challenging who I am as a writer in the same way that UAB has challenged who I am as a person and as a student.…

As a writer I am a still growing. I prefer both persuasive and narrative writing styles. Persuasive writing comes easier to me because I can apply passion to my topic and have the ability to share that passion with others. I also can apply emotion that others can relate to and feel I can make a difference and start the process of changing issues like racism, stereotyping, or global warming. I enjoy narrative writing because it is telling a story.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

In the past semester, I have grown as a writer holistically. Before I began my first-year English composition course, I wrote the DSP (Directed Self-Placement) test. The prompt was whether or not college is worth the investment for the current generation. When I read the instructions that the essay wouldn’t be graded, I knew I could write anything just for the sake of finishing the assignment. When I reread my DSP essay I realized the lack of effort I put into the writing.…
