Canadian Oxford Dictionary defines social media as “a network of websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking” (Oxford Dictionary Online, 2013). The use of social media, particularly social networking sites (SNS) has become a rising trend in the 21st century as it has become a part of people’s daily lives. This growing trend of the new media has grown significantly since 2008; “sharing anything from daily thoughts, feelings, observations, as well as photos and video” has become the norm of today’s generation. (Pezzolla, 2013) Moreover, almost everyone in the society today has social media accounts and some people who do not have them, have been given ‘that’ look as if it is a major offence if a person doesn’t have one. Like other technological advancement, social media has mad impacts in our society. Social media has taken the lead on negatively influencing human behavior.
Social media, including social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and etc., negatively affects people’s work and academic performance. Social media is one of the sources of performance decline because it creates modes of procrastination among students and employees. According to a poll held by huntnews.com, 51% of the participants admitted that “social media is the biggest source of procrastination”.
