Summary: Kevin Poulter is a social media expert and an employment lawyer (Poulter, 2016). In his article, “Social Media in the Workplace”, Poulter discusses the uses of social media in the work place and the legal consequences that can occur with their use. Poulter discusses issues on social media and businesses that include inappropriate behavior, criticizing the employer, bullying, and confidentiality. The inappropriate behaviors can include negative remarks, bullying, and harassment. Employees now have the power to call-out other employees on social media about workplace disagreements. These disagreements then become public for anyone within, or outside, of the organization to see. Also, employees are making negative comments about the organization on social media. This can reflect very badly on their employer’s, because the employee has an inside view of the organization. Employers have even been known to fire employees who partake in inappropriate behaviors on social media. Do employers have the right to do this if the employees have not been warned about it?
