In the U.S., public school is a privilege that all kids no matter their circumstances, can take advantage of. High school especially is an important learning and growing experience in a young adult’s life that prepares them for college and even guides them as a stepping-stone into the work field. Although public high schools may not prepare or equip a student as well as private high schools, most students, depending on their effort, have a shot at a successful future. However, school isn’t just about the educational benefits, it’s about the memories one creates along with it. Many activities such as sports, extra-curricular clubs, part-time jobs, or social events add to the popular and memorable high school lifestyle. “Obese adolescents experienced less sleep than nonobese adolescents. For each hour of lost sleep, the odds of obesity increased by 80%. Sleep disturbance was not directly related to obesity in the sample, but influence physical activity level. Daytime physical activity diminished by 3% for every hour increase in sleep disturbance.” (Gupta). “Sleep deprivation could be particularly important for adolescent health, as adolescents have greater sleep needs than prepubertal children. Yet studies find that adolescents get less sleep than younger children and adults. School schedules, work hours, later curfew… common to the lifestyle of urban teenagers that may potentially interfere with sleep needs” (Gupta). It is clearly shown that staying up late can contribute unfavorably and directly to a student’s health and stability. By eagerly struggling to finish all their homework on time, a student is faced with lack of sleep and in short term, is left unwilling to focus in school the next day.
