Should Teachers Carry Guns In Schools Essay

Improved Essays
Most people have seen police officers or soldiers carry guns with them, but have they ever seen a teacher equipped with a gun before? This is becoming a real question today. There have been many school shootings around the country. People are now debating if teachers should carry guns to prevent such shootings. Teachers should have the ability to carry guns in the future.

First, teachers would have the ability to stop threats quickly if they are equipped with firearms. In addition, if a shooter knows that teachers pack guns, they would think twice about attacking a school. According to the Washinton examiner, "A qualified teacher with a handgun on their hip is perfectly capable of instructing a classroom." The shooter would most likely avoid open firing at schools if they know that they have a chance of being shot by an administrator. This means there would less school shootings in the future. Furthermore,

When a shooter is on campus, a teacher can defend the students from the shooter by carrying a gun. According to ABC action news, "McGhee says he would prefer to see a study done involving all stakeholders, looking into what can be done to protect students, and then change should be implemented based on factual findings." The shooter would have more of a challenge killing students if a teacher is armed with a handgun. The teacher could save many lives and injuries by defending their students. Moreover, A teacher could defend herself and save their own life with the help of their gun. They would have a better chance of surviving and helping others. If a teacher did not have a gun to defend students from the shooter the students would have to hide, a gun can solve the situation more easily. Whether or not teachers should be armed is rather disputable, with a lot of information to support both sides. People argue that school teachers should be armed with a firearm for defense purposes and to potentially save their own lives as well as students' lives in the event of a school shooting. They believe that with the proper training and authority, this change in schools could save many lives. Others believe that arming teachers would create more danger in schools and instead of decreasing the number of deaths due to school shootings, that number would rise. They think that not only should firearms not be brought into schools because of its distraction to education, but that teachers in possession of a firearm would create accidental…

Although on a rare occasion there may be an iniquitous teacher, the vast majority are benevolent people who are willing to save lives. In various deadly situations of the past, teachers have saved lives by the means of a gun. Because a gun was easily accessible, a Missouri teacher stopped a shooter who “killed two students and wounded seven others at a high school” (Malcolm, 2016, p. 6). However, due to current gun-free zones, the likelihood that a teacher has access to a gun is very slim. By providing every teacher with a gun, more situations like that of Missouri would occur, rather than more situations like the Connecticut shooting at…

If an emergency happens at the school and a student becomes a threat to others the staff needs something to protect themselves and others against that student. While a simple pair of scissors or other common class item could work as protection, it would be much more reliable if the staff were armed with real defense weapons. One case of when armed teachers could have helped protected teachers and students is during the case of the Sandy Hook school shooting. This event lead to the death of twenty students and six staff members and many schools in Missouri training teachers to carry concealed weapons(huffingtonpost.com) One argument that might be made is instead of protecting the students the teachers might harm them with the firearm, but to buy a gun and to have one on a campus you must go through thorough background checks and multiple tests to see if they are capable of handling a gun.…

Imagine the idea of being defenseless against an attacker trying to wreck havoc on your teachers and fellow classmates. The worst feeling in the world is when you are helpless, and there is nothing you can do during a situation. Not allowing our teachers to carry a weapon while on school grounds is a great way to achieve this helpless feeling. Since 2013, there have been over two hundred school shootings in America- an average of nearly one a week. Between 2013 and 2015 an average of two shootings on K-12 schools took place per month.…

Also do you think a student would be able to look at a teacher the same after they saw them shoot a person the kids would be tarfided. As already stated everyone is dangerous but people do not realize how dangerous they are until they have blood on their hands. This would also greatly affect their career and if the teacher moved it would be hard to get a job because this would be on their permanent record and the educational board wherever they are will not want to hire someone who is dangerous whether it is in self defence or not. Another thing is what would happen if a student where to get ahold of the gun think of how much damage they could cause with…

In an age where people are trying to take guns away from law-abiding citizens; we need our guns now more than ever. Everytime there is a mass shooting this debate pops up, yet we continue to have mass shootings. If some teachers were allowed to conceal and carry guns in schools, mass shootings would dwindle. The resource officer at the Parkland shooting never went inside and 17 children died, meanwhile, the resource officer at the Maryland school shooting engaged the shooter and saved countless lives. This illustrates the effects that a capable person with a gun can have on saving the lives of children.…

School shootings are a trend that unfortunately has been getting popular for more than a decade. This is causing schools to increase security and prepare for a potential war against unknown individuals. This has shown a negative effect on a significant amount of students who now see school as unsafe. Metal detectors, security cameras, and many other security safeguards have been a regular necessity for schools. Instead of using these things as a last resort effort to prevent violence there needs to be a less invasive plan in place that limits the security presence on campuses without it being overwhelming.…

There are many benefits of teachers being able to carry guns on school property. A gun on school property can deter a shooter by letting them know they won’t be the only person with a gun and people at this school are trained on how to properly use them in stressful situations. Teachers having guns also allows for faster response, this is a major benefit because now school personal do not have to wait to be “saved”. Lastly students and family will feel safer if active shooter situations arise, knowing they can be protected. Feeling safe and secure will allow staff and students the ability to stay calmer during the experience.…

What I think... Teachers should not have guns because what if a kid got caught in a crossfire of the guns. Another reason that teachers should not carry guns is like at a high school kids if they got left in a room Unattended and the teacher the the gun in the desk and the kid knew it and the kid got ahold of the gun. Then that would end in disaster. Another reason that teachers should not have guns is that what if a student had been constantly annoying and being disrespectful and the teacher finally just snapped and shot the kid, that would send the teacher to jail and the kid either to heaven or to the hospital. Another reason that teachers should not have guns is that teachers are there to teach the kids not be a security guards or a babysiter.…

Connecting back to my one of first sub points, teachers will not be teachers anymore if a Conceal and Carry policy is implemented into schools. A person becomes a teacher to educate the youth of America, not to be an armed security guard. According to a poll of the members of the National Education Association teacher union, only 22% favored firearms for teachers and of that 22%, only 26% of them would consider actually bringing arms onto school property if given the opportunity. Overall, the policy will not work because teachers will not support…

These teachers should go through the most intensive background check because they have the ability to hurt a lot more kids than a random person trying to shoot up a school. If the teachers can get a hold on a gun and then tell the guy with the gun that every class is packed and ready to shoot then I believe the maniac will come to his senses and get out of the school. I feel the same way about guns in the workplace. For example at my mom's shop, she was looking at the cameras and someone was breaking into a truck late at night and instead of my mom having a gun for self-defense at her work place she had to take cover as the robber shot a bullet in her direction. This is why I feel so strongly about gun rights and where you can and can't take them.…
