The Pros And Cons Of Arming Teachers

Improved Essays
This year alone there have been over twenty mass shootings (“2018 School Shootings”, Para. 1). Mass shootings have been a major problem for decades, it all started with the shooting at Columbine the most famous one. Ever since that shooting things have been spiraling out of control with no fix. The fix that we have needed for decades was arming teachers.Teachers should most definitely be armed because it would prevent more people from being killed, deter shooters from entering schools in the first place, and increase school safety overall. One of the main reasons teachers should be armed is because it would prevent deaths. Donald Trump states, “If you had a teacher that was adept with the firearm, they could end the attack very quickly” (“Trump arming teachers”, para. 2). President Donald Trump is one of the most famous supporters of the theory about arming teachers, and his quote strongly says that the quicker the shooting ends the less deaths. Armed staff on site could easily respond to the shooter quicker than a police could. (“Arming Teachers Pros”, 19-20). The longer it takes for the police to arrive the more people dead their are when the police arrive, while if we have trained teachers already on site than we are in much better shape reducing the amount of deaths. One of the few reasons why arming teachers is much needed is it will prevent more deaths to happen. The more teachers with a firearm the more people that will be saved. Arming teachers once again has many more benefits, and one of those being that it might even deter the shooter from entering schools in the first place. …show more content…
Arming teachers would prevent shooters from coming if they were looking for an easy target (Hagin, Para. 14). This intimidates the shooter because they know that they won't have an easy target at all and that they would most likely die. Matthew Santoni, a well known journalist states,“Gun-free zone to a maniac -- because they're all cowards -- a gun-free zone is 'let's go in and let's attack because bullets aren't coming back at us. If we did not arm teachers then the shooter would know that it is a gun free zone and come (“Arming Teacher Pros”, 18-19). Not arming teachers in this situation is an absolute disaster, thinking about it a shooter could come in as a free soul with no problem to kill anyone they see, but with teachers armed and trained then the teachers could easily rush to the situation and take care of it. With teachers armed everything is much better knowing that a shooter can’t walk in and shoot whoever they want. Arming teachers is one of the best solutions to the situation of mass shootings in school, not only are we saving kids but also our future. Zilinskas a senator said "I'm not just going to sit and hide and accept waiting, and seeing kids get shot or listening to kids die,” (“Arming teachers pros”, 35-36). Kids are the future to this generation, we can not let maniacs come in and kill off all students, it is immoral and the one thing we can do to change all of that is to arm teachers. Innocent lives are spared every shooting and we continue to do nothing

If an emergency happens at the school and a student becomes a threat to others the staff needs something to protect themselves and others against that student. While a simple pair of scissors or other common class item could work as protection, it would be much more reliable if the staff were armed with real defense weapons. One case of when armed teachers could have helped protected teachers and students is during the case of the Sandy Hook school shooting. This event lead to the death of twenty students and six staff members and many schools in Missouri training teachers to carry concealed weapons(huffingtonpost.com) One argument that might be made is instead of protecting the students the teachers might harm them with the firearm, but to buy a gun and to have one on a campus you must go through thorough background checks and multiple tests to see if they are capable of handling a gun.…

Tragedies that take place on school grounds send shockwaves through communities. This brings up the argument of whether or not teachers should be allowed to carry a firearm. This topic appeals to me, not because I am a huge advocate for guns, but because safety on school grounds should be of the utmost importance. Ultimately, teachers who elect to carry a firearm on school grounds would have to pass extensive background checks and training. Provisions and policies would have to be set in place to make sure students would have zero access to the firearm and that it be locked away securely.…

Arming Teachers: Protecting America’s Assets December 14, 2012 marks a day when America was shocked by the unexpected crime that took place on our own back porch. Twenty year old Adam Lanza made his way onto the Sandy Hook Elementary School campus and began to open fire on teachers and students, murdering 26 people total. According to a website that focuses on gun safety called “everytownresearch”, there have been 176 school shootings in America since the Newtown massacre. A question I have is could situations like Newton be avoided if teachers were armed and trained to use a firearms?…

To arm those teachers, they would need to invest in basic gun safety courses and firearms. Taking all costs into consideration we would end with a hefty price tag anywhere from $251 million to $1 billion (Bump). Valuable school funds would be wasted on weapons and training while we could be supplying students with supplies for learning.…

Specialists have grasped the concept of becoming proactive instead of reactive to situations where lives are at stake. Professionals believe that arming teachers in school districts can help protect children from the up rise of violence in school. Although this idea may be a headed in the right direction, I feel as if there are more effective procedures. Hiring armed security guards removes the cost a school would have to pay to train teachers. This will also eliminate the risk of schools being dropped from their insurance policies or having to pay more as a result of having armed teachers.…

There are many benefits of teachers being able to carry guns on school property. A gun on school property can deter a shooter by letting them know they won’t be the only person with a gun and people at this school are trained on how to properly use them in stressful situations. Teachers having guns also allows for faster response, this is a major benefit because now school personal do not have to wait to be “saved”. Lastly students and family will feel safer if active shooter situations arise, knowing they can be protected. Feeling safe and secure will allow staff and students the ability to stay calmer during the experience.…

What I think... Teachers should not have guns because what if a kid got caught in a crossfire of the guns. Another reason that teachers should not carry guns is like at a high school kids if they got left in a room Unattended and the teacher the the gun in the desk and the kid knew it and the kid got ahold of the gun. Then that would end in disaster. Another reason that teachers should not have guns is that what if a student had been constantly annoying and being disrespectful and the teacher finally just snapped and shot the kid, that would send the teacher to jail and the kid either to heaven or to the hospital. Another reason that teachers should not have guns is that teachers are there to teach the kids not be a security guards or a babysiter.…

The idea of arming teachers in the schools with concealed weapons is ridiculous idea, solving the problem of gun control and adding more guns to this equation is dangerous. Not only is this not the answer but it would create even more issues at schools, people who support the idea of teachers having guns in their possession don’t realise what happens when a teacher feels threatened by a student and shoots the student, or if a students somehow gets a hold of the gun. What exactly is the motive of this action, it makes our country seem gun thirsty with trying to protect our students with the very weapon that is killing them. How will parents ever feel safe sending their children to school knowing that their child’s teacher have a hold of gun,…

We protect our schools with a sign banning guns, and if something goes wrong, we call someone with a gun. Let me clarify, we don’t protect them with guns, we protect them with qualified people that possess guns. Guns don’t kill people just like spoons don’t make people fat. The user is the problem, and a crazy user with a gun certainly has the power to slaughter hundreds of people without guns. I propose that we train teachers to carry handguns.…

Many Sides, Many Opinions, One Goal. Mass killings (defined by the FBI as episodes in which 3 or more people are killed), specifically school shootings, have been in the news many times over the past 16 years (Ehrenfreund). Since that deadly day at Columbine High School in 1999, student safety has become an increasing concern, with the opposing topics of arming school administrators versus gun control at the forefront of debates. Lawmakers, parents, students, and administrators discuss the ongoing topic of gun-carrying laws in schools, with both sides presenting valid points for consideration. These important issues have made communities more involved and aware, taken student safety to another level, and forced Americans to tackle an unprecedented problem.…

But, imagine if in every classroom, there was a trained gunsman (teachers) and they had a gun on them at all times. With the growing amount of on-campus shootings, educators should be allowed to carry a concealed firearm on campus. The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 is no longer a good idea. The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 currently makes it illegal for anyone to carry a gun in a school zone, which is on campus or within 1000 feet of a school.…

Furthermore the guards won’t protect the students, they only sit at a table and check ID’s. There isn’t enough guards placed in the schools, arming the staff would solve all issues.
