Argumentative Essay: Gun Control In Schools

In September of 2014, a teacher who was partaking in the opportunity to Conceal and Carry on school grounds shot herself in the leg. No one was injured except for her, but next time how can we be sure? In today’s society, guns are the center of controversy. If guns are being argued that they shouldn’t be legal in any setting, why would we promote them in an educational setting with the youth and future of America at risk every day? That is why we negate the resolution that teachers should have the right to conceal and carry firearms on school grounds.
For my first point, I assert that guns in school take away from the learning environment in which a school setting should promote. Sub point one, a student will arrive at school every day with

Connecting back to my one of first sub points, teachers will not be teachers anymore if a Conceal and Carry policy is implemented into schools. A person becomes a teacher to educate the youth of America, not to be an armed security guard. According to a poll of the members of the National Education Association teacher union, only 22% favored firearms for teachers and of that 22%, only 26% of them would consider actually bringing arms onto school property if given the opportunity. Overall, the policy will not work because teachers will not support …show more content…
We have a bias towards the fact that guns provide protection and will make us “safer.” However, in November of 2014, the University of Stanford researched and reaffirmed that the right-to-carry guns laws are connected with an increase in violent crime. Why would we increase violence in schools when the goal is to increase protection? In addition, we are not addressing the issue of mental health by administering guns to our teachers. Donald Trump, who believes the recent massacre at an Oregon Community College could’ve been stopped by arming teachers, admits “This isn’t a gun problem, this is a mental problem.” We should be putting out efforts into combating mental health issues instead of arming teachers and adding violence to our school. The Conceal and Carry policy will not work because it does not directly solve the

There are already several ISD’s in Texas who are considering having armed teachers on campuses. Much of the authority over whether to allow guns in schools rests at the state and local levels. In Ohio, school boards are allowed to arm school personnel but are not required to notify the public that they have done so. In some states, teachers and other employees can carry a gun without anyone’s knowledge, including that of school authorities, so long as they hold a valid concealed-carry permit. No one knows how many schools in the United States have armed teachers or staff members. It was a free three day gun class in Rittman k-12 public school employees offers by the Buckeye Firearms.…

The majority of new policies are met with a mixture of praise and criticism. However, it would be a challenge to find any teacher who does not believe it is his or her responsibility to protect the students. Allowing teachers to be armed in the classroom would increase the likelihood of everyone surviving if an active shooter enters the room because it would provide additional protection if the teachers are properly trained. Knowing any of us could be armed by making this policy public knowledge could make the possibility of that shooter entering the building even less likely. Hopefully no school will ever need to evaluate if this was the right decision or not, but in case that day does come, it would be better to determine the effectiveness of allowing teachers to be armed than having to determine how to attend a dozen students’ funerals or leaving my family to plan…

This week, there has been a lot of talk about gun control, armed security at schools, the ability for teachers and students to carry concealed weapons in order to protect America’s students, and plenty of passionate arguments from both sides. We’re certainly no strangers to the debate. Just a week before the shooting at UCC, I published an article highlighting one Utah teacher’s motivation to carry after Sandy Hook and her determination to do whatever it takes to keep herself and her students…

In an age where people are trying to take guns away from law-abiding citizens; we need our guns now more than ever. Everytime there is a mass shooting this debate pops up, yet we continue to have mass shootings. If some teachers were allowed to conceal and carry guns in schools, mass shootings would dwindle. The resource officer at the Parkland shooting never went inside and 17 children died, meanwhile, the resource officer at the Maryland school shooting engaged the shooter and saved countless lives. This illustrates the effects that a capable person with a gun can have on saving the lives of children.…

Many people fear that concealed firearms will increase the number of school shootings. However, this could not be further from the truth. From 1998 to 2015, 92.6 percent of mass school shootings were in gun-free zones (Crime Prevention Research Center). Gun-free campuses only encourage crime and decrease the ability for citizens to defend themselves, as well as others. All in all, one needs to examine the facts and evidence before coming to a conclusion, especially one concerning education.…

Over the past few years there has been an escalation in the use for guns. One reason for why this might be happening is because the guns are being used for mass school shootings, such as: the Sandy Hook shooting, the Parkland shooting, and many others that people don't even know about. This problem has now caused a controversy over whether teachers should carry guns while working in school or not. Many people believe that the only way to defend children during these shootings is if the staff carry guns. Although this idea seems to have many great advantages against shooters, it also opens room for more issues involving the children and the teachers.…

Archbishop Alexander K. (qtd. in Another Mass Shooting). School shootings constantly seem to be in the headlines in the United States causing many to question if schools should really be a gun free zone, should teachers be able to carry guns on school property?…
