Servant Leadership Self Analysis

When I reflect on my career path after my undergraduate degree until recently, I immediately see some of the attributes of a servant leader resonating with me. In the past, I have worked in various capacities the aim of contributing to ending poverty, giving voice to the poor, promoting human dignity and peace. Though these experiences may appear varied, they coalesce around an overall purpose, which is service to the community. My interests and life fulfillments have always focused on the well-being of the communities and the people I work with. I have never consciously taken a step back to evaluate my leadership style, but, rather unconsciously, I find joy and satisfaction in doing similar types of jobs and behaving in similar ways.

After class on Wednesday, I took a step back to have a deeper reflection on my personality to find out where I fit in the servant-leadership discourse. The result is that I immediately identify myself with some of the attributes. For example, building community, commitment to the growth of others, stewardship, foresight, and persuasion. I am moderately related to attributes such as empathy, awareness, and listening. I am unsure how to rate myself on conceptualization. Though I

What number of attributes can I find in me before I can associate myself with a certain type of leadership style? In percentage terms, for instance, could it be 50/100, 60/100, 70/100 etc. A related question to this is, are some attributes considered more important than others?

So, I will be able to say that I am of this leadership style if I resonate in leadership attributes of more than one leadership style. Mathematically, perhaps a percentage or cut-off point may be

However, for over the last six decades, one the most influential authors for the terminology and study of servant leadership, is a man that goes by the name of Robert K. Greenleaf. In his studies, Robert K. Greenleaf describes servant leadership as a type of leader that serves others, rather than the followers serving the leader. Doing so will have the followers achieve and improve. As any leader, they are responsible for the followers and those that are not on the same level as others. The people served grow as individuals, becoming 'healthier, wiser, more autonomous and more likely themselves to become servants' (Greenleaf, 1977).…

Burton et al. (2017) contend the answer is a movement from a transactional form of management into one of servant-based leadership. In fact, studies indicate that servant leadership has gained appeal as a result of the multiple positive outcomes associated with this style of leadership, most importantly it focuses on other-centered service (Neubert, Hunter, & Tolentino, 2016).…

In his article, “The Four Factors of Motivation”, Brian Tracy states, “There are four factors that exist in every organization and determine the levels of motivation of the staff, whether positive or negative”. The four factors are (1) leadership style, (2) the reward system, (3) organizational climate, and (4) the structure of the work. For the sake of this paper I will discuss three of them. I feel that leadership style plays a key role in determining how a team feels about their boss and about their company. In my opinion, a leader may exhibit different leadership styles depending upon the situation at hand.…

The laissez-faire leadership style characteristic is to be more uninvolved and allows the group to make decisions, versus the autocratic leader is one who enjoys control and takes little advice from the group. As a leader, I can also see characteristics of myself in both of those leadership styles, but the democratic style is the best fit. The democratic leadership style seems to be a mix of both of the other two styles because I do enjoy being the one who makes the final decision, but I do not like making decisions without a group consensus. Personal leadership style.…

Servant Orientation Another element or characteristic of a Pauline leadership theory includes an orientation toward service. In his letter to the Romans, Paul calls himself “a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle […](Romans 1;1), while indicating that he is “obligated” (Romans 1:14) to those he has been called to share the Gospel. This is unmistakably an element of Paul’s own perspective of his role as an apostle, and as a servant of Christ. This duality of mission and obligation to those who are in need of the Gospel define his orientation toward service.…

For an organisation to be successful in today’s ambiguous environment, innovation is the key to competitive advantage. This means that an organisation needs to employ methods of continual change in how they function and their offerings to survive and stay ahead. To continually innovate comes with its own set of unique challenges i.e.; consistent idea generation, change management issues, implementation issues and alike. There is a growing body of evidence that recognises leadership style is among the key factors in promoting innovative performance and gaining competitive advantage over their rivals (Leroy, Anseel, Gardner, & Sels, 2015; Paulsen, Maldonado, Callan, & Ayoko, 2009). This paper will focus on exploring the most recent styles of…

While looking through the resources provided for this section it was interesting to see Bommelje quoting Robert Greenleaf, where he says a servant leader seeks first to serve, “then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.” That was very profound because if I look back at my career to where I am now, becoming a leader was a natural step. My desire to serve others moved me toward a leadership role, where I could be a mentor to others and a student to those that I respect and seek knowledge and mentorship. One thing I have discovered about myself is…
