First, this paper will explore how to discuss touchy issues in the workplace and how to make sure conflict does not fester below the surface. Next, it will examine the role and use of negotiation in reaching a healthy outcome when a conflict exists. Lastly, I will look at a time in my life when remain silent about conflict resulted in an undesired outcome. I will conclude by considering how I might have handled the situation better to reach a more positive ending.

Organizations must realize conflict can be healthy, but when people feel they have not been heard, it can cause tension. Minor problems can escalate into big problems if not handled properly. There is an opportunity to harness disagreements into opportunities and reach an innovative solution to the conflict. Courter (2010) discusses that one important aim should be, if possible, is to separate the issue from the causes. In a society to effectively address conflict and bring them to a positive conclusion conducting a root cause analysis is often most effective. Root causes analysis considers what happened, why it occurred, and what solutions can address the situation to prevent a recurrence. Root cause analysis can promote openness, a better discussion and exploration of the underlying conflict, which all are critical in resolving a disagreement (Freeman & Haskins, 2014). Strategies used to resolve a conflict for a team have long-term implications and if the right methods are not used it can lead to continuous conflicts (Behfar, Peterson, Mannix, & Trochim, 2008)
Two techniques, to use to communicate more effectively, are to making sure you hear and understand the message and gather as much information as possible to avoid confusion.
Since most conflicts are associated with communication, partners in relationships should improve their communication skills so as to communicate effectively and minimize conflicts.
They should be able and willing to engage in dialog with each other since the lack of this willingness, in many cases, results in misunderstanding about what each person wants and needs from the relationship.
They should endeavor to say the right thing at the right time, give clear and honest messages, and adapt communication to the other person.
